OSO, stay away from all soy products. Soy protein is the cheapest form of protein available, hence the use in cheap dog food. No high quality dog food uses soy. For dogs it has very poor digestability, makes them gassy, add to that the negative effect on thyroid function (hypothyroidism). When choosing a dog food avoid the following: soy products, any form of sugar, artificial preservatives, cheap fillers. By-products? If your dog had the chance to catch that chicken or rabit it would eat it, beaks and feathers and fur, in short all. Every garbage can = gourmet kitchen for your dog. By-products are not as bad as they are made out to be. You don't have to eat it, so don't apply "human grade" food needs to your dog's food. Pay attention to: first ingredient should be an animal based protein, a variety of different sources of protein should be offered, fat content around 15% (if not, add yourself). For GSD protein content is based on activity - 22-26%. Naturally preserved. Proper calcium-phosphorus ratio (1.2:1). Bonus is: omega fatty acids (pay attention to proper ratio!!), enzymes, kelp, vitamin C and E. Supplements in foods are usually not in large enough doses to be of a real benefit. That is mostly marketing hype, that you pay for dearly. I do wonder how they could possibly make acidophillis for example survive the production process, never mind storage. If you feel that you must supplement, do it separately and keep supplements in the fridge.
