Cutaway, I've heard that linebreeding on Olex is risky because of possible hip issues. Did you get Ingwar's hips done? If so, what was the result?

Wow that is a scary thing to here... we did prelims that looked great @ 22 months, but then i got lazy and have not done his hips and elbows... Even have it pre-paid just have not taken the time yet, will do it b4 the end of the year

But seriously, Mithuna, if you or anyone else (besides WR) was offended by that statement, i do apologize as my words were not as 'name calling' or putting down or anything negative. It was meant in the exact same tone as if someone was watching a decoy do PP work and that on looker said "Wow that person is crazy/nuts for subjecting themselves to that"

If someone could clarify though…what exactly are the old school traits that we’ve lost? Are we talking the lack of control? Handler aggression? Just overall aggression? Dogs that aren’t safe to interact with anyone but the handler? Those dogs still exist. Those dogs still get titled. But just like the dogs back then like that they don’t get bred to in mass and their offspring don’t go beyond their local club so no one ever sees them and they don’t become known.

I was think socially aggressive , dominant and hard with good drives. A dog that is not afraid and very willing to push a human out of the way to get what it wants.

My dog Bosco is similar to what you describe, Mith, but I've trained him to be better socially. There are still a few instances where he'll bark and growl at people. For example: if someone comes on my property, he will alert bark if he's inside and confront them if he's outside (barking and body shoving, no biting). I haven't discouraged this behavior because I don't live in the safest area, so if I feel threatened, I know he'll be there to scare somebody away. Also, once while we were out getting an oil change (I take him with me everywhere to get him socialized), I tried to fall asleep while sitting away from everyone else and somebody approached us while he was lying down calmly by my feet and tried to pet his head (leaned over him and everything). He got up so quickly, barked and growled in defense, but after I told him that the person was okay, he went to sniff them and let them pet him.

But he's not intolerant of people. I can take him to the vet and he's calm, I can take him to the park off leash and let him sniff other people and their kids can pet him, and I can have him around my very young siblings without being afraid he'll maul them.

Socially aggressive? What exactly does that mean? Just a dog that is aggressive towards anyone but their handler and possibly family out in public? I’m not really sure that’s ever been a desired trait with GSDs and there’s no question why those types of dogs aren’t bred to. Sure, they happen, and certain types of people might like them…but I can’t imagine why anyone would breed for that. Breed should be aloof, aloof means doesn’t pay attention to the public. If pushed, they can react in whatever way they’ve been taught, but in general I don’t believe aggression out in public would ever be looked upon as a wanted trait by most breeders and handlers. If that’s what you’re talking about…most breeders and handlers with dogs like that won’t admit it to anyone if they actually want that dog bred to. High level handlers can’t risk dogs like that because they won’t pass the temperament test before every trial or have a tough time getting through the environment around the larger trials without showing that outward aggression and therefore be disqualified.
