You called yourself an airhead ... you should be nicer to self.

by beetree on 17 April 2016 - 18:04

No, I did not. You misconstrue, deliberately.

As usual since you can not stick to the issue with reasonable discourse, you must attempt a personal cheap shot.

by joanro on 17 April 2016 - 18:04

Stop it, bee. You're making cheap shots and insults at everyone.
Bee, how about suing the manufacturers of pressure cookers for committing mass murder....I ask, again.

And i asked you why not sue bush for lifting the assalt weapon ban, you replied with insults.

by beetree on 17 April 2016 - 19:04

@JOAN

You need to stop your deliberate twisting and insults, since it is you, (only) starting with the neverending insults to get my attention. How about what? You are free to go sue anyone you feel like. You want to make frivolous lawsuits against Bush, go for it. Please do as has been asked by Admin and Mindhunt, and stop trying to make it sound like you aren't insulting to me and looking to pick a fight, or make some kind of personality indictment against me. Go follow around, and bother someone else.

@Mindhunt,

I am actually interested in what you have to say to my post that was directed specifically, towards you, and is on the previous page.

by joanro on 17 April 2016 - 19:04

Bee, please put the *exact* 'insults' supposedly by me at you. You make claims which are unsubstantiated
That is very strange, to say the least.

I won't hold my breath for you to substantiate your accusations.

Yes Beetree, his mother did try to get him committed and his fear of committal may have triggered his rampage.  Unfortunately his mother met with obstacles to committal.  It is difficult to commit someone as it should be.  Look it up, you will see she tried.......The reason behind her teaching him gun safety and shooting was because he was being bullied at school pretty mercilessly (not that it is an excuse to kill).

Bullying is a huge problem in schools today.  I am working with many adolescents who are the victims of bullying and with the access to social media, total strangers jump on the band wagon and post horrific things.  It is vastly different now a days than 10 even 20 years ago when bullying was limited to the immediate school and social circle of cohorts.  Again not justifying killing.  I am working with pre-teens and adolescents on a pretty bad case of bullying and porn that the police refuse to investigate because "boys will be boys and girls have a choice to come in and make a complaint and not give in to the threats" direct quote.........When reminded that the victims are afraid of ramifications, the detective said "oh gee come on now, what do they have to be afraid of and if it was that bad and they were suffering as you said (girls committing suicide and self harming) then they should be brave enough to come in, otherwise it is just drama as all teenage girls are prone to."

Teaching kids to use guns because they are being bullied ?
Seriously ? That is thought to be A) an answer to school
bullying; B) an okay thing to do ? By ANYONE ???

WACKO.

Mindhunt,

I took your advice and looked up the original document, and still, I can not see how you make the conclusion you do, without you pointing it out to me directly.

What I do note, in particular of the 37 KEY FINDINDS listed are:

4.   There were early indications of AL’s preoccupation with violence, depicted by extremely graphic writings that appeared to have been largely unaddressed by schools and possibly by parents.

And this:

8.   Recommendations from the Yale Child Study Center, where AL was evaluated at age 14 (AL’s 9th grade year), offered prescient observations that withdrawal from school and a strategy of accommodating AL, rather than addressing his underlying needs, would lead to a deteriorating life of dysfunction and isolation.

More:

AL’s resistance to medication recommended for treatment of his Anxiety and Obsessive Compulsive Disorders appeared to be reinforced by his mother. According to records, AL disagreed with his Asperger’s diagnosis and may not have understood the benefit of individual therapy.

No doubt his weirdess might be an attraction to bullies but, are you maybe, confusing Elliot Rodgers of the Santa Barbara murders with Adam Lanza, perhaps? That is my thinking!  I do not see anything mentioned with bullying as being something that would suggest he needed an AK-47 or any firearm for protection from taunting children, or even mention it was why his mother persisted in providing him with firefpower. If anything, I have read shooting was her poor mothering judgment with a "bonding attempt" .

The study actually mentions this, too:

35.   While this report focuses on educational, physical and mental health issues, the authors recognize the significant role that assault weapons and high capacity ammunition clips play in mass murder. That AL had ready access to them cannot be ignored as a critical factor in this tragedy. Assault weapons are the single most common denominator in mass shootings in the United States and as such, their ready availability must be considered a critical public health issue.

36.  The likelihood of an individual with Autism Spectrum Disorder or severe problems with anxiety and obsessive compulsive tendencies committing an act of pre-meditated violence, much less one of AL’s magnitude, is rare. Individuals with those mental health or developmental disorders are more likely to internalize (that is, to feel distressed emotionally or to be confused, socially inappropriate or inept, and sometimes to harm themselves inadvertently or intentionally) than to externalize (that is, to act out aggressively so as to harm others). In AL’s case, his severe and deteriorating internalized mental health problems were combined with an atypical preoccupation with violence. Combined with access to deadly weapons, this proved a recipe for mass murder. Autism Spectrum Disorder or other psychiatric problems neither caused nor led to his murderous acts.

Since the marketing of military grade weapons, the purpose of which is solely for killing people, was adverstised and made, as only presenting as more acceptable seeming, and when directed towards the civilian market, I do say, it was negligent to do so. If not for the tacit approval such marketing made, and that this targeted the civilian market, then the imperfect mothering in the likes of Nancy Lanza might have found no basis in her idea that buying an AK-47 was ever a credible solution, (for bullying or bonding) with a child.

If you know the specifics that are proof of which you state, and I missed them, then please show me. Thanks.

Hundmutter, not that I am condoning what she did, but I do understand trying, with the best intentions, to teach your bullied child some self efficacy.  It was not the most appropriate type of skill to teach, but at least she was trying.  Could she have made a better choice?  In hindsight, hell yes.  But at least she tried.  I see too many parents who could give a rip about their children or worse punish them for "allowing themselves to be bullied."  I grew up with guns, my high school had students bringing new hunting rifles right before hunting season opened to the school to show off, no one got hurt or was accidentally shot.  There were racks with long guns in the back windows of most pick up trucks.  No one got shot.  But that was a different time when parents and society still believed in respect and holding one responsible for own actions, and no one got a trophy just for showing up or was expected to share their toys unconditionally.

“From what I’ve been told, Adam was aware of her petitioning the court for conservatorship and (her) plans to have him committed,” said Joshua Flashman, 25, who grew up not far from where the shooting took place.

NEWTOWN, Conn. – The gunman who slaughtered 20 children and six adults at a Connecticut elementary school may have snapped because his mother planned to commit him to a psychiatric facility, according to a lifelong resident of the area who was familiar with the killer’s family and several of the victims’ families.

Beetree - From USA Today, Fox News, CNN, etc.  It was also reported in the APA journal (American Psychological Association), Psychology Today, etc. that Adam's mother was seeking commitment for Adam.

Beetree, bullying is terrible to the victims and does great damage, add in the social media angle and it gets out of hand quickly.  I work with adolescents who are bullied and they have shown me some of the posts from their Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, SnapChat, etc accounts.  It is pretty sickening.  Adolescence is a pretty emotional time for most adolescents, the raging hormones, forming brain (prefrontal lobes are not yet formed which govern emotions, social skills, planning, consequences, etc), and the navigation of becoming an adult.  Compare the 12-17 years of life experience to most adults on this webpage of 30-50 years of life experience, huge difference.  I won't even go into the description of ASD and other intellectual disabilities that your post had, it was inaccurate as is the assumption that medication is the cure all for what Adam was going through.  Medication is rarely the answer and is the one common denominator of most of the latest mass murderers, they were either on number of psychotropics or abruptly discontinued them with little in the way of competent therapy.  I have and am seeing the types of therapy used in most psychiatric facilities and it consists of Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior therapy (DBT) all which is used because anyone with basic psychological, social work, or counseling training can read the manual and follow the instructions.  Heaven forbid we use an integrative approach that best answer's the client's needs and may require some pretty extensive training (psychodynamic, attachment theory, object relations, interpersonal, humanistic, existential, systems, etc).

Please don't confuse my empathy and understand with acceptance or condoning of either Adam or his mother's choices or behaviors.Wink Smile
