The puppy, (blk/tan) that bites the pant leg is a very out going and confident puppy, just as the other one (sable) is.  They both are very curious and full of themselves. Bold puppies.  They will both bite on the rag and the pant leg, but each one has its preference as to what it prefers to bite on and will stick to it.  They both are looking for things to carry regardless of the size.  Both have very good focus.  The puppy (sable) that likes the rag better has a tendency to be alittle more independent, where the other puppy (blk/tan) that likes the pant is more wanting to be with people.  He is very eager to please and is learning very quick. The rag puppy seems to have a little stubborn streak in him. It takes more of an effort to make him sit and come when called. The pant leg puppy is always quick to respond.

I tried to upload pictures of the two pups but I keep getting a message that the picture is too large. I have always uploaded this same size pictures, but they just won't load this time.

Although you can explain to someone what you'd look for in a puppy but so difficult to explain everything you'd like to see or look for...

People write books explaining what and how...But there's nothing better then Experience in what to look for and of course it depends on what is the goal...What are you wanting a dog for...

You look for some little things different in a Sport Dog compared to a Police Street Dog...

Q Man, we train in Personal Protection, not sport.  Actually we have a pretty good idea of what we are looking for and what we should be watching for.  I made this thread becasue I was curious as to what others look for in puppies and what their opinions were for this age.  I myself will not make a definite decision on an 8wk old puppy. Especially since we are in no hurry or not under any pressure to make a decision.  We are very familar with these lines and have a pretty good idea of what to expect from these puppies as adults. Of course as we all know, sometimes knowing all those things don't mean a thing.  At this point in time, I like both boys alot for different reasons.  We will be evaluating them for a while. Like I said we are in no hurry and under no pressure to make a decision.

guys...these are puppies....the growling is a game...my present dog was a pant-leg-biting-growling puppy and I would take her again in a heartbeat! You can work on the sounds later.
Flirtpole is just a toy....

I take back what i said.  I read the original post to mean that the one puppy would not engage a rag at all. Instead focusing only on the pant leg.  (the original post to me read that the pup had no prey drive)  anyhow it would be hard to judge if they both will go after the rag.  I do however stand by my original opinion that puppies with no interest in rags, flirt poles etc would not be my first choice :)  The joys of miscommunication over the written word :)

Tingiesandtails,  I totally agree with you!  Your are right these are just puppies.  Thats why I stated I would NOT make a decision on an 8wk old puppy.  Actually with this particular puppy(blk/tan), I like what I see AND Hear.  I am with him and can see it is not a stressful growl.  If he would be forced on the rag or pant leg, I would say it might be a stressful growl.  However if there is a rag on the ground or the person with a pants on is just sitting around and this puppy, (Blk/tan)  goes up to the rag or pant leg on his own and begins tugging and growling, that is nothing "stressful" pushed or forced on him, that would cause a stressful growl.  If this was an older puppy or dog that was actually being worked, I would consider it maybe stressful.

The other puppy, (sable) he just kinda floats around investigating things.  The only time he shows interest in a rag is when we use the flirt pole.  Then he will go after it with alot of enthusiasm. Both puppies are very nice in their own way.  Thats why I was asking what others would prefer AT THIS age and why.

Thanks for the opinions so far.
