The question in the Topic appears to have been side-tracked.  It was asked, as some Handlers actually prefer no contact with their dog!

However, the question as now resulted in the 'Meaning of Training'.

There should be more to Obedience, and training thereof, than just merely a responsive act.  Otherwise it is barely different to a Circus Performance!   Understanding your own dog, (and dogs generally) helps create a bond of trust in working together.

To suggest that "Obedience should not be mandatory" is rather foolish.  That is the essence of obedience, (it may not be perfect) but it is surely not a choice, or to be negotiated by the dog.  To inspire and guide appropiately brings trust and respect between Handler and dog, and enables far more relaxed interaction in any situation. The dog can be confident in himself and the Handler.  If either is "bored" then something is lacking (and usually on the part of the Trainer)!

Regards,
Vixen
