I am happy to say that all three of the dogs above are doing fine. We nearly lost Reba, the sable girl who came in with severe pneumonia, but she has been improving steadily since she was released from the hospital and is quite the driven girl now that she feels better. Goofy (black male, 16 mos old) is a great youngster who loves everything and every body, easy-EASY to train.
My favorite is Rebel though, (formeraly Banjo till I got to know him), the subject of this thread originally. He was also sick and underweight, but is thriving here on the prune ranch, as do all damaged souls (human and animal!). He is only perhaps 15 mos. old, beautifully balanced drives, and lots of everything we want to see in a working dog. I am seriously considering keeping him and maybe competing with him in Schutzhund, a "Poster Child" of sorts, to spread the word about the quality of dogs pouring into kill shelters in this miserable economy, most never getting chance for adoption.
Its a huge endeavor, this working dog rescue program, and I am constantly juggling my (two) jobs, struggling to give every dog the care and attention and training they need and deserve, on an almost non-existent budget.
My non-dog friends think I have finally lost my mind.
They would be wrong.

In fact, I found it again, right next to my heart and my soul, here at the foot of the spiritually magical Sutter Buttes. :-)

My vet not only found pneumonia in Reba's lungs, but also buck shot in her hide. How could anyone SHOOT a puppy girl and then dump her in a kill shelter.

Makes me sick! At least she is safe and on the mend now, headed for a great new life as soon as she is well, gains some weight, and I get some training on her wild little self.

Thank you! This unusually cold winter is complicating a lot of things. Sick dogs have to be crated in the house for weeks, need more care and a lot more funding than the healthy dogs. Between work and the dogs I am meeting myself coming and going right now. LOL

You are in Montana, Shelly, right?  Something to think about for the summer time; getting school volunteers, especially if you had a way to house them for say a week at a time.

I know of a young lady in high school that is working to become a vet.  She would jump at the chance to volunteer and it will help her for her Tx A&M resume.  She is in Texas, so commuting would be out of the question.

PM me if you might be interested.

I am in northern California, about 55-60 miles north of Sacramento. Zip code 95953.
The dogs I rescue are all from southern California kill sheters thus far, 400-450 miles south of here. The logistics can be daunting, and the coast of boarding and tranport high, but the quantity and the QUALITY of dogs being PTS down there is horrifying. I only wish I had more runs set up here so I could take more of them. VERY hard to make the kinds of life vs. death decisions we are forced to make thanks to this miserable economy. I cry myself to sleep a lot.
