Duke: wouldnot call sport fake yogi, there goes lots of time and work into training a dog to perfection and one should respect that, but showdogs are showdogs and sport dogs are sportdogs and LE is another level, simple as that

Absolutely on point. Nobody disputes the hours and hours of training that goes into  the higher levels of sport.

In simple terms, it is called "selective breeding".  Over the past several years, via selective breeding, breeders have focused more and more on creating dogs that can finish on a "podium" (applies to both showdog and sport-dogs) and in the process, a number of the natural abilities that good LE GSDs require, got sacrificed.

In the showdog world, it was to ruin the temperament of the dogs, in search of a specific structure (and the Black&Red color) that the showring requires.   The sport-dog still looks like the prior versions, but via selective breeding, its focus (and the underlying genetics) has altered the dog into gaining "podium finishes" on a sporting field, than being well rounded GSDs with strong and balanced drives (prey, defense, hunt) and bedrock stable nerves that good LE dogs require.   Some of these things (who put on a scintillating show on the sportsfield) are so nervy, with an inability to settle down, that they simply cannot sit still even for a second, (24/7/365), and one can see why they need to be crated all the time, once they come off the sports-field.  This is the complete anti-thesis of what a good and balanced GSD is, and should be.

Both Duke and Yogi have explained this,  but don't know why this concept is so difficult for some people to understand.

So sick of "LE" dogs. For christs sake, does every topic have to turn into LE vs Sport Dogs? Seriously, every damn topic, even if you'd talk about carrots, you'd turn it into LE vs Sports. Get over yourselves. There is more than just LE when it comes to GSD's. To be frank, I'd rather not sell dogs to LE. Because in this time and age, the chance of being left in a hot car is greater than getting shot! Angry Smile

Baeren c that's the problem u think its gone to Le dogs V sport but u missed the point as long as u are breeding dogs for points u breed the natural instincts out of the dog. As long as people continue to cover up flaws in there dogs with the tricks of the trade and then breed them same dogs we will never have a serious breeder's. Cover ups no matter what the breed will cause any breeder to sell puppies with problems. If you are not honest about your dogs that u breed the gs will continue to decline. So if you want a rant make sure you read all the posts because u missed the vital points

Actually BE is making a fair point Yogi, because the actual topic of this thred notwithstanding, there IS an emphasis on the 'correct for LE or not ?' slant that several posts are taking at this point. And she is quite right: overall, there is a statistically greater chance of a Police dog (worldwide) being cooked to death in a hot car than of getting shot or stabbed in the line of duty. And why ? Because LEOs, just like some Breeders, sometimes put other priorities before the interests of their dogs.

That is NOT to say ALL Police Officers are apt to neglect their dogs (any more than anyone said ALL sports-oriented breeders neglect their dogs). Just that there are cases, they do happen, they could probably be prevented with a bit more thought.

Hund don't understand what that has to do with this topic

The era of Show fanatics is gone..

Now it's Sports fanatics and LE fanatics.

Are you sure there are no other breeds that'd be better suited for your fanaticism?

May I ask who that was directed at

by Swarnendu on 25 August 2017 - 12:08

yogidog, did you feel that you are qualified to be directed at as fanatic? You decide yourself.

What is seen in the last several pages is sports bashing vs LE bashing.

I thought OP wanted a discussion on "Serious Breeders", not Sports-dog breeders or LE-dog breeders or Show-dog breeders or Pet-dog breeders. All these types of breeders can be pretty serious about their job.

Seriousl breeders breed for a correct dog. Not for a Sport or Show dog. They breed for the correct dog, period. There is no need to drift off to LE vs Sport!

by Swarnendu on 25 August 2017 - 12:08

Well said, BE...

Sadly "that Breed" is now as dead as dodo..
