Sue B

Dana,  You are so right  - well said. Another voice of reason who fully understands the breeds traits and origins. I despair at these Trial Fanatics that are never satisfied unless they are pulling the breed apart.

4pack as for your comments regarding how VA dogs of today look and work, how would you know have you ever owned and worked one? Bet you havent even spent any length of time in the company of a VA, so what evidence can you possibly have to confirm your statement? Without ever being in the company of them how could you possibly properly assess their true character, temperament and working ability?

Laughable 4pack?  I tell you what is laughable, you coming on here telling us what is wrong with our GSD's only to then admit you dont even know if YOUR DOG has the temperament or ability to herd sheep, now that is laughable for someone professing to be aware of von Stephanitz every thought, especially as M v S intitial use for the GSD was a sheep herding breed !! RAOTFL

Regards

Sue

I wonder if anyone actually understands what Stephanitz had in mind.   All I see today are extreme's pulling in what I see to be the wrong direction's.  I to have my opinion's that are probably just as misguided.  But mine arent extreme.

The debate rages on.

Sue I hardly need to own a VA dog to see how they work. I have owned Highline dogs in the past and no thanks I'll pass. As far as evidence, the week grips and poor protection phases are all over the Internet, what more proof do you need?

I didn't come on here to tell you  what is wrong with your dogs. I don't know you or your dogs and vise versa. Sure I'll say I don't know if my dog will herd. He's 14 months old and never seen a sheep, you want me to lie? Concidering my dogs herding isn't paramount to his success in life, I'm not real broke up about that fact. Very few sheep in my neck of the woods and so many other jobs he can do. Also I hardly professed knowing Capt. Stephanitz' every thought but it doesn't take a rockett scientist to see, the majority of todays dogs are not what he was going for.

"The GSD is not a Thuringer. We do not want a hyperactive, unmanageable dog! Please study history and original sources again. Von Stephanitz is often abused in quotations. His struggle to maintain this breed as a working dog - and this breed is different from a Malinois- is to maintain the GSD as a helper and friend of the human race in a broad field of tasks as a serving animal. We remember this breed of WW1 as the seeing eyes for the blind, the rescuedog, the Meldehund, Sanitatshund, its enormous achievements up to the present days in searching for mines, drugs, Fährtenhund and of course as a reliable companion in thousands of homes. So please do not abuse the statements and goals of the Ritmeister. And study his time and put  his statements in the right context please!  The real GSD acts "like a gentleman" and is not a dog to be afraid of. A highly gifted, intelligent, reliable animal to serve...... sound in spirit and body based on the foundations of the herding dogs and their mental and fysical qualities. We do not need fanatics and ego's. We need persons which respect and love the breed and can maintain its qualities.  Do we realy think Helmut Raiser is such a person?"

My dogs are far from hyper active or unmanagable, so I'm not sure where this statement us coming from. I'm not one who believes they need more energy or drive, not a good working line GSD anyway. I agree the GSD is a helper and service animal, as well as a family friend at the end of the day. My dogs come in and visit but they don't live inside, as full time pets because they are NOT pets. Every dog I own has a roll to fullfill in my life, be it shoulder to cry on, workout partner, guardian or childrens protector and confidant. I have't owned a dog that had no purpose but to "stand still look pretty". My goal, if I decide to breed one day will be for working dog, dogs bred for an actual job, there is no more noble cause for a dog. I'd love to see your VA catch a perp or sniff out a bomb. Oh wait no, he could never try, he is too valuable to be put in the line of duty. Could Ursus Batu herd sheep all day?

Shows are the detriment to all breeds, if you breed just to win at shows, instead of using the show to assess structure and then move on from there. It seems with showing, it all ends at the title. There are a few exceptions to the rule and I highly respect them for it. Fanatics and Ego's are exactly who is in control already. What better way to feed your ego than a high dollar, winners circle dog out in your pretentious 100 dog kennel facility? What then after all the trophies and ribbons? Pump a couple thousand pups out of him and sell him to the highest bidder over seas?

Eeek the whole process makes me sick. I don't believe Max tossed his dogs aside in the end or recomended high scale breeding establishments for the GSD. Who can really know and really manage more than 10 dogs? I'm getting a little off subject so I'll stop.
