Reckon I would bark and snarl if I was left tied to a wire fence and blokes came and shouted at me ...

I did have a daughter, but I defer to the real W/D folks on the real contributors.

Sunsilver, i don't know about that dog anything else that it seems was recorded somewhere in former eastern bloc country and this dog most likely not even in possession of breeder but used just like watchdog. what a waste of such beautiful, big and powerful german shepherd dog.
Hundmutter, pretty much all dog can bark to stranger. my point was toward an anatomic appearance of that dog, which disappeared from breed but not about barking ability.
like what in hell is this - collie positioned to be a german shepherd dog?

ValK, longcoats have always existed; I have had and handled very big solid longcoats (funnily enough, mostly used as guard dogs !) here in the UK for years in the 90s/2000s, plus one in the 1960s. Believe me, between them they had a lot of various downsides as far as 'GSD purity of breed / working ability' goes (as did their standard coated siblings / cousins). And the long coats are very popular. Not everybody needs their dogs to be forever in the snow. By the way, you may not have noticed but the SV has accepted them as fully part of the breed.

perhaps von Stephanitz constantly turning over in his grave due to how and what SV accepting as "diversification" of GSD breed.
if you have time, try to browse this site for dogs from Stephanitz's era and see how far to the edge of absurdity the breed went in phenotype diversity after his passing away.
as for work - if dog belong to working breed, foremost that dog a must be physically capable to perform this work.
i truly don't understand how people, never met/interact with dog can consider that dog as their dream dog?
on my part i have my faves but that's my and other dogs i known in person in my past and their names won't say anything to people, who never saw them. from pictures or video i can assess dog's appearance and physical suitability to fit requirements in projection to a field of utilization. but very rarely there any video, which demonstrate aspect of mental readiness of dog for work. shots from sport field totally useless. in fact i got more info about temperament of dog on chain than from videos shot on sport field and posted in this topic.

My vote would be Jaro Ja-He... not only for what he accomplished but what he produced.
