Sport to LE? Who's done this? - Page 37

Val, it really isn't "just what goes in today's GSD development"; I strongly suspect the " I want a black, long coated one" shit started way back not very long after Max put the breed together ! I have been around enough different people in the UK GSD community selling litters, over the past 50 years, to have picked up that the first questions when buyers enquire for pups are ALL about coats and colours and costs ... and very rarely about the health history of the parents, and even less about their working or sporting history (or even the Show history). Face it, the vast majority of people who buy the GSD are uninformed and just looking for a pet or a 'home guardian' and have no concept of what goes into making their dogs suitable for protection.

Else why is finding a ' "black recessive, long hair" performance' stud the important factor in the new thred just opened by 'golka', for instance ?  137 hits already !  QED !

Hundmutte i guess popularity in mass of GSDs did major disservice for breed.
people mainly want not german shepard dogs but a nice looking walking picture of these dogs.

good dog can be recognized even through video. particularly if shot weren't intentionally staged. in second video very obvious a good partnership between dog and handler. nice, calm behavior of dog during unfolding of scenario.

Duke when I say :"In my opinion, every dog who makes to Nationals is very good to exceptional"Then I am talking to all the people who are saying that dog is out of place or out of class in this competition or not on the level of this competition.
The performance of the dog depends on the handler's state of mind just as much as the dog's training level of the dog. If the handler is nervous then the dog may get out of wack in his performance and there are some other aspects to handling and dog's sport performance  besides nervousness. 
Just about everybody, with some exceptions, including you are evaluating dogs COMPETITION performance in relationship to his ability to be trained LE/Pp dogs. IMO precision of performance of the dog in a sporting event has almost nothing to do with his ability to be LE/PP dog. While I am evaluating this dog for LE/PP work, I am totally not interested in his precision of performance required by such sport event. I can clearly see that this dog with his ATTITUDE would make excellent LE or PP dog. I would love to train this dog for such work.

I used to have a short fuse while driving, and have had some hood pounding encounters in the past with other drivers. But, in this day and age, I keep my mouth closed and zippered shut. Everything has become too crazy - In the US anyway.

anyone who cares to google detection and shelter dogs (in the U.S.) can find examples of rescue dogs doing this work, as well as LE work.

Cherokee County, Georgia, Shelter has supplied 7 in the last 4 years.

that is not very many for a large population. but it is only one shelter screening and there are how many hundreds (or thousands) of shelters in the U.S? I have no idea.

I couldn't find accurate, up to date info on how many dogs are euthanized in the U.S. each year, but it appears to be close to 1 million.

Im one hundred procent sure if some serious party would make cooperation with shelters, there would be many dog that are suitable for one or another job
