Louise, Are you suggesting something equivalent to ADPT, The Association of Pet Dog Trainers where trainers are certified, and require Continuing Education Units (CEUs) to maintain their credentials? I doubt if schutzhund helper/trainer gets a "license" per se, but rather a "certificate", if at all. I would assume that he/she would need to earn their certificate under more than one judge, say a Board, and maintain their certificate with further education. I think more than occasionally there are abusive and/or neglectful trainers when the owner is out of sight, however in hindsight, from personal experience, I think that the challenging of one's 'credentials' as a schutzhund trainer and or helper needs to be done prior to the agreement to train as well as a written agreement. I don't think that a handshake between sportsfriends is always good enough anymore, sorry to say, especially if a new person to the sport is searching for a qualified trainer. Does anyone ask for credentials, other than personal references, when selecting a helper or trainer? Does anyone insist on a written agreement?

Hello all Let me clarify this some,in the State of Texas and a few other states, you have to be licensed to be able to do ANY kind of aggression work PERIOD!Doesnt matter whehter is it for Sport or what, you are teaching an animal to bite. There are various and different agencies that are the ones who license, control, babysit or whatever you do want to call it.In Texas the rules extends to criminal law,if you are accepting money PERIOD even for helper work then you fall under the durisdiction of this state.Whether you teach, guard dog,K9,Personal Protection,SchH and do not have a license through the Texas Board of Private Security you can and will be fined if they find out.I understand the fact of needing a helper,I was ust pointing out that maybe some laws where you are might apply to paying a helper,as some{helper} shouldnt even be taking money are they are not classified as a Professional Trainer for Protection purposes. As I stated there are several states that have this law in effect.IM not to sure of the names of the direct agencies who cover this or dictate this but they do exist. If the monies are taken by the club and put into a kity so to speak for equipment ect,its not against the law.More or lesss what I am saying is that it is WRONG for some helpers to charge the kind of money they do and it be against the law and they are even supposed to be doing so.These laws{rules} have nothing to do withUSA,DVG,WDA,PSA,RingSport,orMondioRing. These organizations might have thier own rules for compliance but so do States around the country. There are so many out there who do not fit the legal criteria to do this.

Hi Kerry Does anyone ask for credentials, other than personal references, when selecting a helper or trainer? Does anyone insist on a written agreement? I myself way back in the earlier years did so,I would check out everything.IN about 1982 I got into the situation I am telling you all about.I was in a club to where they had been reported,at the present time Texas Board of Private Security Agenices came out as a guest, watched the entire ordeal then began an investigation. The Trainer{helper}were fined a heavy amount of money for taking money from others for training when he had no legal right to.There are times I have too many dogs for other people and need a trainer.I would only use a handfull and they are in Germany and Slovenia.

I have often wondered about the qualifications of some of these trainers myself.
