I agree with those that said Nate will have the kind of dog he'd like.
I fail to see why if someone likes that kind of dog, why anyone who doesn't would care? Too many momma's on here.

Did I read somewhere that you have one of Nate's dogs, Red Sable? If so, what's the breeding?

Social aggression is a confident, self secure dog, one with a degree of domimance who WILL engage civil when needed, if properly trained and handled. It is NOT a defensive dog, although a degree of defense is needed for seriousness. Personally, I really like a dog with social aggression that can be cultivated into protective instinct.
LOL thats not socially aggresive that is just a good dog that is serious and will protect its handler. Just cause a dog can be civil when needed or can be very serious does not mean it is a socially aggressive dog. I think gsdpack is right. OR it can be just a sharp dog with courage. THese are not dogs you wan't to mess around with or let strangers pet.
people are just getting bent out of shape because of the word social i admit that is a stupid word to use, I think what the op really wants is just a good dog that has a very serious civil side to them when they need it? Am i right? Doesn't need to be a dog that will foam at the mouth anytime some stranger trys to pet it in public? (like ive seen my friends filas do i consider that social aggression lol) THey are okay dogs to go on walks with but good god if a stranger trys to pet them or bug them they can turn into hell hounds, i have never touched them even, im shocked he takes them on offleash walks with me and my dog considering their reaction if someone trys to pet one you think someone just woke up a tazi devil. Just be more clear EXACLTy what you want to see in an adult dog. A dog that will bite for real in real situations probably i am guessing.

I am always amazed that people feel that a dog who will show aggression to a child is not "sane." Some dogs are completely sane and clear headed and will show aggression to ANYONE outside of their immediate family, that pushes the dog. Not all dogs are meant to be brought to the family picnic. Some dogs will not allow strangers to pet them or hug them, just as some people will not allow strangers to run up and "pet or hug them." How many people reading this thread would allow a stranger to run up and hug them out of the blue, ok I know a few of you would.....I don't see that as being a sign of an insane dog, an unstable dog or an insecure dog. It can be quite the opposite; simply a strong dog that doesn't allow strangers to hang all over him / her and put their hands on it's head or face.
A strong dog does not have to view people (adults or children) as a threat to want to be left alone or reject people touching them, many strong dogs do not want strangers touching or fussing over them. These dogs will generally growl, but will not make a huge display of barking and acting overtly aggressive. A strong dog does not need a big display to get it's point across. I'm am not saying "all" strong dogs are like this, some love people and have high "pack" drive and good social skills. But, don't discount the ones that will show displeasure to strangers touching their head or grabbing their ears or collars. It doesn't make all of them unstable, just very clear in their boundaries and rules.
As far as definitions go, I have my own and they work for me. I have given up on trying to define dog terminology, I prefer to look at dog and see what it is telling me.

So what is socially sable, confident! LOL..lets discuss that one.
To me any agrression tied to another word is a sign of something else than "sgood, confident"... agressive and confident are not the same thing... so as I talk to many people on the phone, throwing words like these on me, I tell them to describe me the traits rather than tell me some made up weird combinations of words...
To me innitial agression (without a reason, thread and so on.. I needed to add this) is in no way confidence! I can be confident to tell you off nicely or aggressive to take a bottle of beer and whack you on a head with it just because I don't like your hairdo...
I had to fix the last sentence...it came out all wrong.

This seems too easy for me to understand "Social Aggression" Aggressive in a social environment. What is the deal with people that get all stupid and insulting about what someone likes or wants. I myself am looking for a new dog and to make it simple I want him mean. I want him to show aggression to anyone near my truck near my yard or house. I am not looking for a pet I am looking for a dog that keeps people out or bit. It is what I want, and that is okey for me to have that, BUT it is okey for others to have what they want and they are not required to like my knid of animal. Be nice to people that are different then you.

Hopefully all of us would agree that we want a "Balanced Dog"....right? One that has their head screwed on right...or thinks in a good way...(correct way)...
Soooo...back to the question...or the statement about "Social Aggression"...What is "Social Aggression"?
I think it's good for everyone to open a discussion on terms and find out what each other is thinking or defining them as...There are many terms that need to be discussed and defined so we're all on the same page...
Such as "Ball Drive"...What is ball drive and what is good "Ball Drive"? I find this to be a basic term and it seems as though everyone describes it differently...Try it and talk to someone about a dog and ask what their "Ball Drive" is like...then see the dog and see if their ball drive is what you think was meant when talking about it...
Soooo...To me..."Social Aggression" might mean something different then others think of it as...First of all if we're talking about a balanced dog...Social Aggression is an aggression that is directly attached to "Pecking Order"...(think about it)...
~Bob~
P.S. Remember dogs think in Black & White...NO Gray areas... ... ...I think people over-think what dogs are thinking about...In short dogs and their training isn't Brain Surgery...
