I see. Jenni, I am most surprised your neighbor didn't follow your own personal experience and vaccine protocol, after it happened the first time. Sad when a beloved pet dies needlessly, no matter what.

In case there is anyone else who seemingly didn't understand what I wrote: She (neighbor) told the vet not to vaccinate her again after the first reaction to the lepto (the dog did ok with other shots). The dog was there at the vet's for a GROOMING appointment, and the dog was vaccinated, unbeknownst to the owner (until she got sick and she looked at her invoice and saw "leptospirosis vacc." The dog is now dead. The end.
I can't even comment on the rest of your post because I have no idea what you're talking about. I need to go to work more than I need to know that, though, so it's ok.

Abby, I totally agree. I didn't live near her at the time (she lives down the street from my rental house that I had rented to relatives at the time) so I don't know all the details and certainly didn't knock on her door to ask her about it when I moved back in. I would be all over the evening news if someone did that to my dog. I think we should have to sign permission for them to be vaccinated, personally. Owners need to take a greater responsibility in their animals' care and not assume the vet has is infallible.

No mystery Jenni. You know best as always. They did a necropsy, I suppose? I just wonder, how you can state something like that as such an absolute. I have to clarify what you write with what I think may or may not be relevant, and perhaps left out. This vet and his whole profession is being somewhat trashed?
It usually is best if we don't understand each other, I'll go with that. Ok here, too.

Excellent post ! I have never seen or heard of Lepto but roof rats are common in our city and pack rats common in the desert. Is there any vaccine manufacturer that makes a Lepto only vaccine like the bortadella vaccine thst is offered? I have a feeling that is would be a very popular option if it was offered.

I just came across this discussion because I am looking for more information on the leptospirosis vaccine. My dog was vaccinated recently and it looks like a lot of people are wondering about a lepto only shot.
I know of two lepto only shots, and I assume there are more available. My dog got Pfizer Vanguard L4. There is also one made by Merial called RECOMBITEK 4 Lepto. Both protect against the four strands of lepto that are apparently most common and both companies claim a full year of protection. I have read that the Merial vaccine is supposed to be safer side-effects-wise. My dog didn't have side effects to Pfizer, though.
I just wanted to share this info. I worry a lot about vaccine reactions, and I split them up as much as I can. Honey gets Rabies, DA2PP, and Lepto all on different dates, 3-4 weeks apart (when it's the same year). Rabies and DA2PP are every 3 years, Lepto is every year. I agree that having Lepto on its own is important because I don't want to revaccinate for DA2PP every year just to get the Lepto component.
Also, technically you can get Distemper, Parvo, Adenovirus 2, and Parainfluenza (the DA2PP or as many people call it DHPP) as separate vaccines, but I don't think a lot of vets stock them this way.
My vet has not seen Lepto in our area, but my town's board of health recommends the vaccine because apparentl there have been cases in our area.

I live in vancouver bc and just had to put down my 11 yr old healthy dog. She got contaminated with local park water were birds must urinate in or rats, the park was saturated with water so when she ran after the ball she must of taken some in. I went to the vet New Year's Eve with lethargic symptoms, my dog got so bad just sitting waiting for the vet. Blood work was done and results showed kidney failure. Her toxins were so high that I had no other choice, aggressive treatment was hardly a option. With the failure of her kidney, I had to let her go. It was a shock to me and my family not coming back home with one of our family members. According to the vet, this was a rare case here in Vancouver, but we did test for Leptospirosis, while she was still alive, and it came back positive. Now our entire family needs to get tested.

To Care2121 sorry to hear about your loss as its sounds to be the same way my dog went its hard to think that two healthy dogs can be struck down so quick with this disease

I'm from Balanga City, Bataan Philippines, I have 5 mos male gsd pup & 4 year old Gsd bitch got sicked with leptospirosis and died with it at 2 weeks interval.
It happened sometime in July, our rainy season period, My puppy Og very timid and didn't want to eat on the 1st day. He just drink water. On the 2nd day he begun to vomit and I decided to bring him to the vet, he can't figure out what the cause and prescribed some rehydration drink for further observation and to bring Og the next day.. on the 3rd day I noticed that his inner ears & gums became yellowish. I brought him to the vet and told bout the yellowing of his ears and gums. As the vet saw my pup that morning he told me that is leptospirosis and told me it is very hard to cure lepto. The vet injected some analgesic to calm the pain on stomach have him rehydration intravenously. At about 4pm my puppy passed away.
After bout 9 days my bitch begun not to eat I decided to bring her immediately to the vet for the leptos. The vet gave her immiediately anti leptospirosis tablet and rehydration drink + dose of vit B complex. The same symptoms happened after 5 days she died.
Once infected with leptopirosis it is almost impossible to cure the vet commented.
Thru my research i found out that leptos are sickness caused by rat urine and during that time when heavy rains causes floods on our nearby areas, there many rats that proliferate on our compunds being higher on surroundings, our place became rat refuge area.
Our dogs have updated 6 in 1 vaccine and we are advised to use the 9-in 1 vaccine since there 4 strain of leptos are already known.
