I wasn't aware that SV changed the standard since January 1st. If SV likes to include long coats, than LSC is not an issue anymore. I believe that because of that you will see a drastic increase in long coated puppies. I don't believe that AKC changed the standard. Did they and am I not up to speed? From what I know you cannot show LSC in an AKC ring as you cannot show white dogs. Below is a quote from the AKC standard (still present at the AKC website)
"Coat
The ideal dog has a double coat of medium length. The outer coat should be as dense as possible, hair straight, harsh and lying close to the body. A slightly wavy outer coat, often of wiry texture, is permissible. The head, including the inner ear and foreface, and the legs and paws are covered with short hair, and the neck with longer and thicker hair. The rear of the forelegs and hind legs has somewhat longer hair extending to the pastern and hock, respectively. Faults in coat include soft, silky, too long outer coat, woolly, curly, and open coat."
I don't believe that AKC will follow SV any time soon, as long coat puppies are not such a big issue with Am show lines. If I had a puppy with a long coat (doesn't matter how well built the dog is) it would have to be a pet/sport dog only.
BTW – Does anybody know if there a lot of long coat puppies in a working line GSD?

it is a fault in AKC standard, but not a dis-qualifying fault, which is what prevents from showing.
Also there are no restrictions on breeding or registering LSC or LC for that matter with AKC.
AKC standard does differ from SV standard. Not really much in significant areas. It's the interpretation that differs.

I agree with Rik that the ‘interpretation’ of the standard is what created so many ‘versions’ of GSD.

Here is Reiker, just turned 9 a couple of days ago. Still running hard and strong!

I own a 3.5 year old longhair sable. I have not found her coat any harder to care for than my standard coated dogs. infact, as someone else has stated, come shedding time, she's the easiest to brush out and keep looking tidy.
I've never kept a longhair before due to living in North Texas with the heat and humidity. but since owning this girl, I've found no difference in care. She doesn't get mats and doesn't get any hotter than the others. infact, I would figure her to be more prone to mats since she loves water and will sit in the water bucket and play in the kiddy pool.

A lot? No, but a fair amount. The long coat gene is carried by many GSDs and is found in all lines: German showline, German WL, DDR, Czech, American, etc. All you need are two carriers and you've got some coated pups!
As far as caring for a dog with a long coat, I agree with Uberland- my coated girl is easier than all the stock coats I've had, and shedding doesn't seem to be as bad either.
alboe- I LOVe your coated boy- he's gorgeous...but of course I've really devoloped a soft spot for the coats since I got my first one a few years back .

She doesn't seem to shed as much, only because it doesn't fall out as easily, it must be brushed out. Every coat i've known has been like this.
