Some interesting points about the value of a Good Citizen Dog qualification:  the way finding
a club in order to start can give people contacts into going on to do better things later; the
quick stop-gap for puppies before they get good enough for sports titles; landlords* etc requiring
some proof your dog is civilised in its behaviour.
Of course the AKC is going to use it as a money-raiser; what else is new ?  Just as the UK
KC gets a little out of it - however in their case they maintain it costs more to administrate the
scheme, than they get back from entries, certificates etc.  And as Abby points out, we have
THREE levels - must say I was surprised AKC hadn't thought that one up first ...
As Vonissk says, there's nothing actually wrong with being able to brag it as another title;
but lets hope we always make clear it does not by-pass other requirements for dogs fit for
breeding purposes.  Any more than you would select a stud who had only SchH I, nothing
higher, and no health clearances.  Same for other breeds too, though maybe without the
Schutzhund. lol
*As I had to move home at the beginning of this year, I was quite glad I could announce to all
& sundry that my boy is a Silver KCGCD;  he does not have any working titles (and I don't
think prospective landlords are too interested in his BVA 3:3 hip score).

Nothing personal - but I find it humorous that someone would think that apartment management would ask to see a dogs CGC title to rent an apartment to a prospect........mostly they just ask how much the dog weighs.................and give me a deposit.....

There's already far too many, ah, shall we say, 'financially-motivated breeders', spanning the whole spectrum of AKC-recognized breeds, who've been claiming the CGC as a title and justifiying their animal's breed-worthiness on that basis; and now the AKC is going to legitimize that lie for them, since they're HUGE cash cows for the organization.  THAT'S why I have an issue with this decision--because there is no other conceivable benefit to be had to elevating a CGC certification to the level of a title.

Bleh.  I hate our species, more on some days than others.

Yogi, yes mostly I'm sure that's all they do.  But we are not all the same and we are not all
looking to rent in the same places.  Believe me when I say in my case it WAS useful - though
they believed me, they didn't ask to see the actual certificate ...
With so many landlords and housing organisations - at least over here - being pissy about
'no pets' in properties, any tiny thing that can tip the balance in a dogs favour counts.

many apartments in the U.S. have breed and weight restrictions as well as require a hefty damage deposit. One complex I am familiar with charges $150 extra per month for pets. This is probably the result of the pet owners not being good citizens even if the pet is.

Oh yes Rik I second that thought!

Lol Rik - I have a 24 year old son that isn't a good citizen - he really can damage some doors and walls.....

I think it's good that it's a title now. I just hope people don't rely on it for breeding purposes. Like ok I titled my dog in CGC, that's enough to show it's breed worthy right? I agree with Yogie that it's harder for working dogs to pass the title. I've personally seen her dog in action and in home settings. He's a good citizen, but he gets so excited when he gets on a field and barks (don't see how that makes him a bad citizen in AKC eyes, but oh well). I'm hoping to try to get my girl to pass it. It'll be just one more thing to accomplish with my babies.

Hi all, I haven't titled a dog but would love to, our country is way behind the 8 ball, when it comes to what you all have in your countries, I being in Australia.  I can dream and read your posts, and laugh to myself, You know a CGC should be allowed on public transport, shops, in most places as long as no food, not that the food bothers me one bit, would others, play in school grounds and on swings at parks, lol Sorry I see where it could be headed, lol joke

Would they fail the dog if the handler wasn't CGC? lol
