"I bet she razor burned him to do that close on a #7 blade.. I never use anything but a # 10 as I have groomed cocker spaniels for 40 years."

Ummmm, a #7 is longer than a #10 blade, so your more likely to give a dog clipper burn with a #10 blade. Also do you need 3 Oster clippers? or Blades to clip your little cocker? Because it sounds like your not oiling your blades or the clipper correctly. I worked with my finger tip in contact with the side of the blade, if it started to get a little warm i would spray it down with Cool Lube or flip it out for another blade of the same size. I had about 3 or 4 of everything.
something about that don't sound right to me.

i had an aussie that preferred to be shaved every summer. the first time i she struggled and complained. I got half way done and let her go. she came back for the second half within 5 minutes. after the first time i would sit on the ground and she would come to me at the sight of the clipper. in the winter i still gave her a "zip strip" so she could keep herslef cleaner, she appreciated this.

yes, its an unexpected surprise, he most likely asked for the dog to be shaved and they did as he asked. the fur will grow back by winter and all will be back to normal.. chalk it up to lessons learned and leave it at that.

Her hair is very very very thick..and the oster clippers are very old also..I use a 10 always..I have a 15 that is useless.
I am not talking about the show cut  I am talking about stripping her all the way down...I could puppy cut or show cut with one clipper...

I am out of KOOL also...have not had any in a long time...I use a little bowl of alcohol and dip it in it and cleans and cools but not the whole clipper..

 I will order me a can ....

I oil my blades yes, and my clippers are only A5 Oster..single speed.  # 7 is 1/8" and #10 is 1/16"  YOU are correct on that...I was thinking backwards , as I never use anything but a 10..maybe I need a #7 for her thick double coat matted coat instead of a 10//.
I looked at the CHART just now and surgical is # 40. and It does show 7 or 10 for matted heavy coats.  I will stick to 10.. I found a 7 in my drawer just now so I may send all these in a bag I have collected to Oster and let them sharpen them...Dallas has a repair center for OSTER>

OSTER>not ANDI.. I have been told by many ANDI are better...I have just always used Oster.
I use to have a SUNBEAM  pair of HORSE clippers I used on my cockers when I let them grow out..COCKERS hair mat very fast...I do not brush them often....too busy with gsd..

THE hair and the grooming is why I quit breeding and handling COCKERS.

THE main reason it takes that amount is because she is very thick and half matted . I only one now and use to have 5 of them...TOOK me three days...THEY  all have the very thick coat.

Scarlets is a lot less and I do not clip them as often as other people do..so it takes  three clippers to get her done...RIGHT now I am waiting on a new # 10 blade...ordered it today....I have a newer pair of Oster A5  2 speed but I dropped them and they are sitting here waiting to be mailed to OSTER>  Costs money to do that so it is last on the list..

I posted a picture on the  show your DOG equipment a month ago...of my  tools..I think Chez posted it ..

YOu are welcome to come clip her anytime you want..I only have been doing cockers for 26 years,  my own and then only had one pair of  clippers. I finally bought the second pair and now the third which I dropped ..I saw today in Revival the turbo A5 is on sale 139.95. Mine is the 159.00 . IF I had it running with new blade I could do her in one day...I have to break up my standing time..I am not use to it daily..IT is a once in three month job here.. I am not a dog groomer. I groom my own for ME>>.

Here is two of them I sold that live in Tyler. THEY get their hair done every three weeks and it takes the lady one hour to do both..so they are kept well . MINE are kept when I get to it..

Right now it takes 2 pair to just get half of her done and then I wait till tomorrow to finish.

Her picture I believe is on this thread..Nothing wrong with the picture or what I said...We have no one locally who sharpens blades either....and if I happen to take them to the vet , and wait for the blade man, guess how many times they come back not sharp enough or get back someone elses blades and I mark them with HHH on them too with fingernail polish..

I bet the powder you feel on him is for razor burns.  I use to help groom poodles and the groomer used a powder to help in the discomforts of razor burns.  I don't remember what is the name of it is, but I am sure that is what the powder was used for.

If your vet knows you well enough and gave you a discount because you are such a good client, Seems they should have known that after all this time you NEVER had Trigger clipped down to skin before, why would you want him done now.  Seems that should have been a BIG red flag and a reason to contact you FIRST!  Sadly, I think its all about the money with some vets.

Hang in there, it will grow back. Till than, don't treat him definitely or he may become self concious of his new appearance.  Just let him enjoy the new feel he is experiencing.  I bet if he isn't razor burned, he is probably enjoying the new "do".

Yellow rose, if you have about $125 laying around get an Andis A5 single speed or upgrade to a double speed and be amazed by a superior clipper!
The shop i worked at had 2 Osters attached to a clipper vac and i hardly ever used it because i didn't like working with the Oster.
1 too big for my hand, made grooming rather uncomfortable.
2 noisey! And the internal fan blows dog hair in your face. Plus i noticed that osters get hot after a while.
3 expensive to maintain. They have too many working/moving parts. Plus you have to take them apart to oil them.
4 they are heavy! they were clearly build for a man to use and most groomers are women.

Andis,
1 small and light weight.
2 better built motor and only have to oil the driver. Never the internial parts. NO FAN!
3 very easy to maintain. Only 4 screw and you have 80% of the machine exposed.
4 you can use the blades you already have!

If i had a spair still in my possision i'd mail it to you. But my sister beat ya to it.

When i did a regular cocker cut i usually did a 10 X 7
#10 on face, belly and sanitary. #7 on the head, neck and back, blend into the body
If you have a very thick matted cocker use a skip tooth but be very careful as a skip and cut your dog if used around the belly, groin, or armpits. But a #7 makes for a very nice smooth clip on a cocker. #10 is what i did total strips with to remove everything. In florida lots of people loved the shave down for the summer. #15 is considered a surgery blade #40 is total removal of all surface hair. Anything shorter is a bic razor for sure.

On that black shepherd a #3 or #4 skip tooth would have left the long coat looking like a natural short coat. The dog would not have looked peeled. I do agree its a hack job.
where are you located? Because there has to be a reasonable blade sharpener in your area. Check the fabris stores as blade guys often hold a dull blade/scissor round up day.

And lastly i never used any powder because i never clipper burned a dog. Because i kept my fingers in contact with the blade. If it started to get hot i'd either cool it or change it. Best thing i ever learned at Petsmart. :D

OP, So sorry to hear of your longcoat being shaved... Hope his coat grows back OK.

*Dragonfry and/or anyone else - Can you give me some tips on how to properly blow out a coat? And how to most quickly dry a dog after visiting the beach? I have a Challengair 2000EV but it takes me quite a while to get my dogs dry. I hate that wet dog smell, blech. Thanks in advance!

No worries that I am treating Trigger any differently. I feel bad for him wondering what he went through at the vet. I am secretly hoping he bit the groomer :-)

I fixed him a plate of boneless pork chops last night, his favorite. Having no hair certainly hasn't affected his appetite. He's still my beautiful boy no matter how he looks.

I appreciate all the info on grooming. For now should I just use a soft brush on Trigger until he starts growing some hair back? Not much to brush right now.

Triodegirl,

Yes, Dragonfly, the OSTERS get hot , that is why it takes all three to get thru Scarlet.

I will not order the oster like I said, several had told me to buy the ANDIS..  I just always had Oster and most of the time they worked..when I did nothing but cockers and I kept them in proper cut every two months...but my life is not in any position to groom cocker spaniels even now..Scarlet does good and her hair does not mate easily but when I let  it get thick and when I get busy like now I have 4 broken ribs and a crushed back and chip off my spine, I let  her go.....she is inside in ac and all is fine..

I use CORNSTARCH on myself and on anything that is chapped, or needs comfort.. CORN starch is natural and silky and does not have perfume in it..

Revivalanimal.com has clipper blades on sale...ordered two 10's  .. I only have 16 of them in bag...we have poor clipper sharperner people serving TYLER>>> Two vets use them...

I will order me a new ANDIS ...Watch the day I do...Scarlet will pass away...Scarlet is 10 going on 11years...

THIS is why I have not ordered anything new is , I AM not in cocker spaniels any longer..but scarlet is my only one left..I could take her to my girl at Pets mart but 36.00 is my CANDLE money...So I will get her done with the new blade and send OSTER to be repaired in DALLAS>

My retirement means I do not spend money unless real necessary.. THANKS DF
