I am blessed with 2 vets that are wonderful.  My vet back in Michigan is a working dog breeder and is very blunt (which I love, believe me, she is not afraid to ask how far up your a** your head is if she feels you did a "stupid") and my vet down here in Florida is a daughter of a K9 officer, her grandfather took his GSD on patrol before they had K9s, her brother and cousin are K9 officers.  She is the last to ask me to neuter or spay my dogs although she will ask pet owners to do so if the dog is going to be a family pet.  I got very lucky with these two and trust them completely with my dogs' well-being..

Only if there is a medical necessity. I am a responsible owner. No accidents.
But for the average pet owner, I DO recommend spaying and neutering, females before their first heat, male GSD's after they are physically mature (2-2.5 yrs)

I have never had an intact male wander. Ever. My neutered 11+ yr old mutt took a walk around the block the other day, solo, but that's it. My GSDs haven't left the yard even when the gate was left open, and my Pit Bull regularly jumps the fence to come to the front door and ring the bell.

My favorite vet/spay story is the nasty "URGENT! 3rd Reminder!!!" card that appeared stating that Capri is "dangerously overdue for her spay."   LMAO  I called them and told them they could take me out of the computer and stop wasting paper; they would never see another one of my animals again. Too bad for them....those puppies all need health certificates, which cost a whole lot more than the spay they chose to push.

Careful, Jen... if you don't spay her, she just might explode!

Our vet advertises as a "spay-neuter clinic" (it's in the name), and they never once nagged us about our old poodle who was intact (he lived until 12 or 13 until he was deaf, blind, arthritic and in just bad shape...), nor my mom whose 11 y/o Golden is still intact (but she's a girl). Our boy right now was neutered at 8 weeks by his previous owner, and is the laziest, most stubborn dog I think I've ever met. Does it have to do with him getting snipped so young? Who knows.

Spaying-Neutering was the first topic out of the instructors mouth at our class. Psh
