After initial puppy shots and 1 yr vax I do not re-vaccinate except for rabies which is mandated by law to be given every 3 years. To those of you who do not do rabies, have you ever had a problem because of that? The last time my dogs were due (almost 3 years ago, so coming up on needing it done again unfortunately) my vet and I went back and forth at length about it. She eventually got me to comply with the argument of, "If a bat/raccoon is in your house and animal control requests rabies certificates and you cannot provide them, your dogs will be quarantined excessively and/or destroyed."

My next door neighbor did in fact have a bat get into their house about 2 years ago and almost had a big problem when they could not find the rabies shot certificate/tag for their Westie. Animal control seized the dog and after the owners got in touch with the vets they were able to get the dog back. So, those of you who refuse rabies, what do you do? Please give me some guidance. My 5 year old and 11 year old are due for their next rabies vacs soon and I would rather lose a limb than do it, but I also don't want my dogs destroyed if something were to happen. We are outdoors a lot and travel quite a bit although I have not once in over a decade been asked to show proof of anything in any state - which is good because I do not keep collars on them or even have the tags on their fur savers. I HATE over-vaccination and the thought of knowingly poisoning my dogs with this stuff makes me sick.

Prince was over due for his rabies vaccination when my childhood friend posted this story on her Facebook.....This is a short version of the the events that lead up to her dog Maggie's death that started due to her allowing her dogs rabies vaccine to expire ..After hearing her story and seeing how ignorant a system can be I will never allow Princes rabies vaccine to expire even by a little..Other than rabies I will not annually vaccinate..

If you are late with a rabies vac here in FL, the vets I've talked to will only give a "one  year" vac meaning  you need to have a booster in a year and then it's considered good for 3 years. The one year and three year vacs are identical, the vials are labeled differently, Nice little scam, isn't it?

I am amazed at how many dog breeders still start giving  puppy vacs at 6 weeks or less.

Once the initial course of puppy vac's, and the first one-year rabies vac is done, the only thing I vaccinate for annually (semi-annually actually) is Bortadella.

I don't generally vaccinate against bordatella either.

The only puppies I've had (bred or owned personally) die of parvo were vaccinated. I've pulled every UNvaccinated pup through it just fine...even a 2lb Chihuahua puppy. I no longer vaccinate for parvo UNLESS someone demands it AND I can quarantine the pup at my house, in my clean, fenced backyard, until 2 weeks after the pup is vaccinated, and at that point I will ship the pup. The only buyer I had get scared and vaccinate for parvo according to the vet's protocol lost her pup at 6 months to parvo. I don't believe it's effective enough to outweigh the risk. I also had one buyer do parvo only shots after taking the pup home and the pup had what could only be described as low-grade parvo for months.

I can't believe people still vaccinate annually.
