I agree with the above regarding vet diets. Maya was dying of undiagnosed EPI and I had tried every food available but no luck.  She kept losing weight, yet ravenous, diarrhea and vomiting herself down from 80 pounds to 55 pounds withing two months. I resigned myself to having to put her down. Last resort was a TLI test that I learned about on an EPI site. When the results came back with the diagnosis, my vet sold me Medi cal royal canin gastro intestinal high energy both kibble and canned and the pancreatic enzymes.  Within just a few days there was a complete turnaround with Maya. It was almost unbelievable. I kept her on that food until she gained back about 30 pounds and was back to normal and then found a food called Back to Basics and made the switch gradually. From all I have learned about dog nutrition it still baffles me as to why this food that is mostly corn and rice saved her life.

My vet thinks because it is hydrolized ( broken down into one single protein and carbohydrate ) and then becomes easily digestible for the dog and I would imagine the allergy one is the same. Singling out a single protein and  carbohydrate you can then not worry about the dog eating something it is allergic to.

All I know is it worked for Maya and at that point I would have paid any price to keep her alive. Now that she is stable and her weight is back up she no longer needs to be on the vet diet. However, that being said, as soon as she gets sick from eating something she shouldn't have, I always have a bag in the house to feed her to stabilize her again.  Crazy,,,,, I know......But it works.

yeah i willl pm jenni, my cat suffered the samething she has uti serious uti issues but science diet cd has kept her healthy for years and her coat does not shed and her coat is thick and healthy she looks great is very active and really healthy. I am scared to put my cat on anything else. Before hills c/d my cat was on orijen. Before origjen my cat was on evo.

I know cats are another species though.

I always look and whats in the food and feed my cat or dog what i think is best but sometimes it just makes the animal worse like my dog was worst on orijen she was anorexic with a horirble coat and gooey eyes hot spots etc..
