Still working it out with my new puppies.

Baron and Bane go with my son.  Rose goes with my Sister.

This issue has been on my mind as well.  I also want folks to know a living will normally is for when you are alive and incapacitated and directs things like what extraordinary measures you want or do not want.  It IS important to have a springing  power of attorney in the event that  you are still alive but unable to direct where your dogs go.  Also, sadly, I have seen many instances where a spouse was trusted to take care of their spouse's dog(s), knowing the dogs meant everything, and as soon as they found another companion (two legged) or got tired of dogs they never really liked, they got rid of them,  Hank is so right that the things we love and looked for in our dogs are what makes it impossible for inexperienced handlers to deal with them.  After 65, I will not get another dog, other than to foster, for that very reason.

Just a thought, but, does anyone think maybe we could start a list of people that might be in a position to be willing to take on a working dog or dogs in the event of owners death or even temporarily if they are incapacitated?  It might be something that could save some dogs from death.

Good thought Hunger.

For my puppies...... Max will not be hard to put him in the best home.  He is sweet, loveable, with perfect umph for a family home.  Cirberus is a different story.  She requires a bit of extra effort that many homes and people cannot handle.

It is so weird to see this topic posted because I was just thinking of this very thing yesterday. My older showline female could easily be taken care of by anyone in my close or extended family... but I have no idea what would become of my WL male. I haven't even gone away in 5 years to any place that the dogs can't come too mainly because I don't know who I could trust to handle my male.

Thanks for all the posts. I hope more people will contribute...

It has always been a given that our family dogs would be cared for by the rest of the family. I am certain that my family would want to care for Prince, but I know  they can not manage him. They do not have experience handling dogs with Prince's temperament. They would take him out of obligation. My fear is that without proper handling Prince is going to get himself into trouble and end up in the wrong hands or PTS....

I don't know what ever made me think of this subject, but now that I have I am determined to settle it...

I know chances are pretty good that I will out live Prince, but there are just no guarantees..

My second life insurance policy is for my dogs who cannot be placed and my horses. Several people have instructions to place the easy ones (Chihuahuas, any older pups/young dogs I may have). The not-so-easy or ones I don't want going anywhere else for fear of mistreatment (Capri, my Pit, who is a TOTAL Momma's boy and just doesn't do well without me) would go to either my best friend or my boyfriend. Both are aware of my instructions. My bf would likely take Simon, and my best friend would take Capri. Now, I also have stipulation that if my son wanted any of them in particular (he would still be very young if they were still alive) that they stay with him if possible. If not possible for him to keep them, they stay w/my bf simply so my son can still see them regularly.

I have made it clear that should any of my wishes be disregarded, I will do some serious haunting.

Great topic that I'm glad someone brought up because it's not something I'd even thought about.  It'll be interesting to figure out who would be willing to take the dogs, especially if they already have dogs themselves.  I doubt most folks that don't have dogs would want to take one (or more) in...but those with dogs already might be hard-pressed to make room for various reasons, despite being willing.  And of course, I view them the same as kids - I wouldn't want to have kids separated, nor the dogs if at all possible.

Lots to think about and take into consideration.  Really glad this topic was mentioned.
