I don´t like crates... they are damned small for an animal...
As long as the puppy is young and you are afraid of accidents or destroyed homes, why not use a kennel, a " dog room ", or another fenced area, where the dog has the possibility to move, sleep, and play?
When I got my pups, all of them were around 8 weeks old. They slept beside my bed without crate, and all of them were housebroken within 3 weeks.
Just my opinion, no rule

Here's a picture of my husband doing "Crate Games" with Martin in February. I can't believe Bosco was ever that small!

"Only 1 day a week i had to keep her home and that day i went home to let my pup out and eat her lunch."
Poor puppy had to go without lunch one day a week. :(
