I believe that through GSDCA-WDA the AKC does in fact accept IPO titles............
Would need to check into if to make sure though.

I have to say yes the CGC becoming a title is a set for more money for AKC - however - you can train your dog for Schutzhundours and still "fail" the cgc.........it is a different Venue........CGC evaluation is for more "pet" evaluation - I have a dog that has been trained from 6 weeks to 3 1/2 years old for schutzhund.......he has failed the CGC twice.........go figure..........He is a good citizen - I know it...........but for what I train - the common AKC evaluator isn't use to a working dog such as "he is""....................we will work to get that little title........is it not compariable to a Schutzhund III with the training that goes into him - - lots more training - but the ten steps is important and a workable goal. Don't mimimize it.......We build drive for schutzhund and AKC doesn't see working dogs in the same manner when evaluation of the CGC....................I am glad that they decided to make it a title............... Maybe IPO titles are in the future - who knows.............

Rik - it isn't about a "house broken dog" - maybe you feel that way cause you have worked "showline" dogs and not a workingline dog................did you try your dogs with the CGC ? did they pass? you certainly didnt title them in schutzhund yourself...... would they have passed the little housebroken test? My dogs are house broken - however - my boys drive has failed him twice........ pisses me off when I know what he is capable of..............my working line female - passed - but her drive was an issue............My hopes is that AKC evaluators will work with the WorkingLIne GSD and not put them in the same category as a Yorkie.........................!!!!!!!

what made your dog fail the test, Yogie? 2 of mine have it. I found the BH way more testing than the CGC. I also have done AKC Rally; currently working my male through the titles. However, practically all our preparation comes from the Schutzhund field. He just got his first leg in Rally Advanced with 100 points, perfect score and first place. I will be trialing him for his IPO1 in December, and might do the CGC with him then. The only concern that I have is the meeting of a friendly dog as mine is such a dominant a$$.

Of course the BH is more testing - my dog at the time was ready for his schutzhund 2 - We did the entire 10 steps perfectly...I figured it would be a piece of cake we are talking a CGC for crying out loud.... the part the evaluator failed him for was the group........He did a perfect figure eight thru the group - schutzhund style - he had his head up - not paying attention to anyone but me- just barked a couple times with excitement -  he passed the friendly dog - passed the touching by the evaluator, etc - but because he barked with excitement - he said he failed.......... said that because it was for a "good citizen" that people shouldnt be scared -    they werent scared - just a matter of opinion - but a failure to say the least.............
Schutzhund training is building of drive- AKC seems to not want that  drive.. kinda lathorgic........so it is different - but we will get it..........my boy has had a accident - so we are recooping - but he is a good citizen-----lol I just know it..........Yogie

My old girl failed the CGC first time because when they lifted her foot as to trim nails she licked the person doing it. I know my dogs are all good citizens but I don't think any of them could pass it, because of the licking, passing another dog and staying with an evaluator with me out of sight for 3 minutes. I think it is 3--that's been a long time ago.

I think if they want to make it an official title, that's fine. Or if they don't it's fine.

hello yogi, didn't mean to step on your toes. I think any activity one does with their dog is good. But most doing CGC are doing so for breeding purposes. I can't apoligize for taking the stance that a GSD should have a sch. title as well as a breed survey before breeding. And as it seems for some reason, you have made this personal, what requirements do you think a GSD should meet before breeding.

best,
Rik

If they did it in the UK my old lady just got 3 titles (bronze, silver and gold) - way to go LOL.

We only ever did it because we could (and did), we like to train, we compete in ob a bit, and other things too and just like to do stuff together. Not for breeding.

Hey Rik - sorry you didnt step on my toes........ Just making a point..........

I beg to differ in the fact that most people are doing a CGC for breed purposes.... Maybe this would be at a AKC dog shows?  I doubt serious that the CGC is what the dogs prancing around in the ring came for (just so they could get their housebroken dog title so they could go home and breed) that is laughable.......
Surely, everyone would feel  that  if they got the CGC they could breed?

Why is it when you feel that somebody is taking something personal from you - you always jump in to the lets talk about breeding stance?    If you really want to know what I think about the requirements of breeding - I think the stud should at least buy the bitch a beer.

Back to the CGC, I personally think it is a great stepping stone for those that which to obtain higher levels of training with their dogs.

In schutzhund, starting a 6 wk old puppy to getting a finished dog over two (or older) can sometimes be a very long frustrating road.   We all want to get to that level with our dog and if we have some smaller goals that we can achieve with our dogs it is more rewarding as trainers.

Our club started offering the CGC a couple of month ago because of this view.  For those that are seasoned trainers might not feel the same about getting a CGC - but for those that are newer to schutzhund - it gives possible rewards when the final IPO3 reward seems so far away.

Just my opinion.

Some apartment complexes are requiring CGC if you want to have a dog, same with home rentals..
