Krazy- the microchips from Revival, the AVID SUDS, are only $10, I've used them for years with excellent results, just to let you know.

Thanks Cmills,
I HATE Avid!!!! They charge you for the chips, then $20 to register..
24 HR Petwatch is only $6, and nothing to register....
Think I will stick with those,
Had 4 dogs come in that were supposed to be chipped with Avid, used my own scanner then took them to a vet with an Avid scanner, never found the chips on the whole dog, I know they can move, we checked under the belly, sides, neck literally the whole body and never found them. I then remicrochipped with mine. Just FYI

Glad Ben is back!

I use AKC microchips, they are international and not too expensive.

I won't use AVID. I use HomeAgain, from Revival. I pay about $14/ea. for them. My 2 rescues had AVID chips- my cat's is halfway down her front leg and my dog's is down in his chest. Who the hell is going to scan them there if they get lost??? I spent half an hour scanning to find them.

You can register ANY chip w/24PetWatch, can't you Steph? I have a friend who works for Schering-Plough so I had codes to register all mine for life. Otherwise, I think HomeAgain is one of the more expensive chips, though they never move, so I think they're worth it.

Thank you for your offer Jen :)

I had researched the different chips last year.  None of them seemed to be a perfect answer so I was hoping that someone would put out a perfect chip (read by all scanners, doesn't move, accepted by international standards for import/export, no ridiculous annual registration fee, etc.)

I have used the microchip syringes before, back when I worked at the show kennel they chipped all the dogs they kept.  It was AVID, and those chips did move, they had their own scanner and we found chips down in the ankles, chest, ribs or not at all sometimes.  It really turned me off of microchips back then.

Does anyone in the US run an ear-tattoo registry, like the one we have in the UK ?  And like
the SV scheme ?  I've always preferred this system, given the various problems with microchips
(and because I prefer not to have 'shrapnel' floating around in my dogs LOL).

Hundmutter, not that I'm aware of, which is the problem w/tattooes. If your dog has one, and you KNOW someone stole it and know right where it is, you can bring the police and say "that's my dog; see the ear tatoo number xxxxxx." Otherwise...it means little unless someone who happens to see it knows what it means, which is about a snowball's chance in hell. Some people who wouldn't know to look for a tattoo won't see it on a dark dog, either. This is why I chipped Capri though she was of course already tattooed and part of why all dogs are now being required to be chipped instead of tattooed. I don't like foreign bodies in dogs anymore than the next guy, but if you look at the chances a dog will be separated from its owner vs. the chances a dog will have complications from the chip, it's a no-brainer.

Most of the "premium" chip brands can be read by one scanner now, provided it's a newer scanner.

I found a freaking homing pigeon and was on the phone with his owner in minutes after searching a computer database. I thought it was asinine that pigeons have a better chance making it home.

Weird, my GSD wouldn't leave me, more than to go to the bathroom (?)

Guess she takes her job serious, other than being a GSD, PP

Betta Wolf,  Benjamin is a silly German Shepherd, he has a personality/temperament much more like a labrador or golden retriever, he comes from who-knows-what American BYB lines, no "GSD sense" at all.  The other two boys who were loose in the house that night too (Urman and Aaron) are pure WGSL and they stayed in the house even though they could've easily followed Ben, especially Aaron...he's best buddies with Ben.

I appreciate Ben's concern about not wanting to potty in the house.  But I certainly would've rather cleaned up a mess in the house then freak out because he was missing.
