Krazy Bout K9s

by Krazy Bout K9s on 27 August 2012 - 19:08

Yup Sept 11th --8 weeks, approx.
AC couldn't remember when they were born, just said within a few days of her confiscation, which was July 13th. So I figured they were born about July 16th...
PS, he really does like being held on your lap!!!!

I need to stop being impulsive about this pup!  I bought the large Sherpa carrier from our local pet store. I am going to bring it back today, because I think they way over charged me...it was over $100, and I think they charged me for the one with wheels. And the one I have doesn't have wheels.  I don't need wheels. Seems like a bit of overkill for a one time use!  Also, I can get free shipping if I order online. Which I should do pronto, some do not offer expedited shipping. I hate having these "loose ends". Rather prefer everything was in place, at the start.

I am worried about height, (please dear God, I want those ears to stand up, but let that wait until we get home!). Everyone says the pup will most likely lay down so it is more important that it is long enough for the pup to turn around, so he will lie down.

I'm wondering if I should order and send you two, that taller looking one, maybe or the one LF suggested... that says it is 13" high... the Bergen one? And then I could just return the one I don't use.   Steph, the only thing is .... you just can't actually put the pup in the one I need to return. Or I suppose I could just donate the extra one to you...even... I just want the pup to come home with us in the cabin!

What do you folks think? I can't think any more!

Oh, and the local petstore has two freezers with RAW. They even have bison, venison and other wild sounding game. I didn't recognize the brand name mentioned as the one Jenni said, but that shouldn't matter too much at this point... I think? Which protein do you recommend for when we get home? I imagine the poor pup will be starving when he get home!

Deep Breaths Bee....LOL

This is the model I brought Cisco home in, http://www.petmate.com/soft-sided-kennels size large.
It was a little snug but he fit just fine. You can open the top for him to poke his head out, cuteness factor :)
I think I paid about $30.00 for it so not too expensive.......I would still order it on line and have it shipped to Steph.

There's no harm in ordering the two.
The one with the puppy will be carry-one and the other will be your personal bag which you can stuff in the overhead.
The one you don't use you can return.

Have Steph feed him early morning, and wear him out before you take him on the plane.
Obi slept through my 2.5 hour flight.
Your pup may sleep through a majority of the flight.

Really pad the bottom of the Sherpa bag and carry extra pee pads just in case he does have an accident.

My pup slept for his 8 hour flight. If you leave the puppy under your seat, the vibrations from the plane will help him be sleepy. Definitely try to wear him out first, though, just to be sure.

Mine are eating this: http://www.instinctpetfood.com/product/instinct-grain-free-raw-frozen-chicken-bites-perfect-trial-size-65-lb-bag
a
long with green tripe & organ blend & Grandma Lucy's Pureformance formula (chicken). EASY way to feed little ones. I stay away from synthetic vitamins/minerals for little ones and keep calcium in mind. Tripe is about perfect.

No one but Steph will know if the birthday is fudged a bit so he's more likely to fit under the seat. She doesn't know exactly how old he is; maybe Beetree, you should listen and try to go sooner.

I still don't see this soft carrier thing working. I have never shipped a pup who would fit in one at 8 weeks, let alone stay in it and be quiet on the plane.

Thanks Jenn,
My thoughts exactly, he is quiet, but NOT 8 hours worth of quiet. They just learned to go in and out the doggy door today....oh man they are getting big. 8.5 #'s today. Adopted out Bijou, the sable with the black face today also, only 3 left!!!!! Yeh!!! now I have to start working on Maggie's litter.

Bee, ya want to take 2 home???? LOL...steph

My girlfriend's eyes lit up, Steph, when I showed her the pix ... but she's in the middle of a remodel and her DH would kill her.

Now, girls, he doesn't have to be quiet for 8 hours straight!  The flight from Missoula to Denver, is under 2 hrs. Doable! The flight from Denver to LGA is under 4 hrs. And we did go for the 5 inches of extra legroom. Possible!

I have no choice at this point except to remain positive. Steph, when the Sherpa gets there, post a pix With Beau in it, and then if I have to panic, I will.

beetree, i went to petco and got a flight approved soft crate from petco or petsmart, the price was closer to 35$ (on sale). Bravo was a bit grupy for our first flight, his ears seemed to bother him (like a baby). Once stuck my hand in the crate and reassured him he was much better. I also gave him his first marrow bone. Within minutes, he was happily chewing and didn't seem to care about anything but that bone.

during the 3 hour layovers, i spread a baby blanket on the floor and took him out of the crate (kept him on a leash). i took the bone away, made sure he had plenty of water and food, and played tug with him (trying to wear him out) without letting him sleep. We went to the family restroom for potty breaks (always cleaning up after). when people came to see, i let them socilize as much as they wanted.....again to exhaust the puppy.

the second flight was "old hat" to the puppy, he was happy to have his marrow bone back, chewed for a while and just fell asleep. third flight, once seated, he barked becasue he expected that marrow bone!

first flight was from whiteplains ny to nj (short flight with broken ac), second was nj to chicago, third was chicago to houston....best schedule, and least expensive i could make for short notice. total length of the trip was well over 12 hours.

the noise level in a plane is very high and except for the people sitting closeby, most didn't realize he was even on the plane

bravo has excellent temperament and confidence, so it was easy.

had bravo had a bit of crate training the whole experience would have been easier...... the only issue i had was introducing him to the crate...... he protested more about being in the crate than the flight itself. funny thing about the softcrate..... bravo learned how to make it roll, like a hamster wheel......lol.

things to bring with:
large baby blanket
leash and flat collar
puppy tugs or other regular toys (for layover)
super high reward chew toy (for while on board)
food that he's used to eating (travel is not the time to change)
food/water bowl
extra absorbant stuff for the bottom of the crate (i used baby diapers with elastic stuff cut off)
paper towels for clean up
several gallon size freezer bags (for poop - in plane and during layovers too)

enjoy the adventure.......relax and have fun......puppy will notice your stress level and act accordingly.

I will get him used to the bag when it comes, and send you photos. They go ahead and sleep in the open crate in the mudroom, so shouldn't be a problem.

Darn Blue has learned to use the doggy door, more than the rest. He really wants to be with ME!!!! He comes in and then wails at the half door into the mudroom. I had to shut the outside door to keep them outside for awhile. They are going in and out by themselves now, it is fun to watch them playing and pouncing in the grass.

Will try to get photos this afternoon...he is on a raw diet, so not sure how they can haul that on the plane??? If for those short hours, maybe just a couple small frozen hamburger cakes for him to gnaw on, then you an feed him normal abit after he gets home.
Steph
