   If the coat in general is in good condition, and you're feeding a food with sufficiant fat content the old hotspot should return to normal in a short time without a lot of help.  Rather than putting Vasoline on it (which as someone mentioned the dog will most likely lick and re-irritate the area) you might bathe him with a tar or oatmeal shampoo which would condition the coat and continue the healing process.  Aloe is also a good ingredient as is Vit D. for Shampoos. This will do better than putting on some topical ointment of any type.
