Abhay, why are the good men always taken?
Jenni, from your lips, to God's Ear! When a gal is with me, it's First Cabin, all the way. It's to Arbys for some Beef n Cheddars with Curly Fries, then we swing by Sonic for "Happy Hour", for some Route 44oz, Cherry Limeades. I take a woman to the Stars!
A few years ago I was living in a "college town" when I heard that some of the students would buy puppies from the farmers and/or cheap country breeders, then drive them back home to the city where their family lived and sell the puppies for 2-3 times as much money as they paid for them. Sounded pretty dumb to me, but I guess there were quite a few people that did it.
Years ago as a COMPLETE NOVICE I went to a kennel that bred German Shepherds. I grew up with no dog, and knew that German Shepherds were what I wanted, but nothing more than that. I pulled into the yard and he walked out of his kennel building. Walked down the path and leaned on the gate. I said hey, and that I was interested in getting a GSD puppy. I asked him what he bred for (meaning conformation, obedience, herding or pets) and he looked at me like I was from Mars and blurted out "TA SELL 'EM!!" I couldn't see the pups he had as the mothers got so excited they'd "kill the pups", and he couldn't bring his males out for me to see "cause they don't like strangers much"....
(and no, I didn't buy a puppy or dog from him)
if any one claims "improvement" let them buy titled stock from breeders like vom arlett, bad-boll etc, breed better dogs, then give the pups out free of charge or at 200 dollars per pup, then it can be said " this is improvement without recourse to money". The truth's that all and sundry breeds for "real big buck" and some for "extra". Ask gunbil if they just breed for "improvement" and make nothing.

Quickly doing a mental tally of what I've spent on dogs/breeding and what I've made, I *think* I'm just barely in the black. I don't add in what it costs to feed them, because even if I didn't breed them, I'd have them anyway and be feeding them anyway. If I added in cost of upkeep (proper upkeep, not Vicky Lanig-style upkeep), I am pretty sure I would be deeply in the red. But if I weren't such a picky person and bred every bitch I had, even the ones I've had since puppyhood and didn't bother to try to find the best, regardless of cost, I think I could come out far ahead of where I am now. Still, unless you are a HUGE commercial kennel w/a lot of help, or your dogs live in deplorable condiitons, I don't see how anyone is going to get rich by breeding. I really, really don't see how Average Joe, a responsible breeder, is going to rake it in hand over fist. Hell, I still have people making payments on pups who are pushing a year old...and some not making payments, lol. It should be about breeding the best way you can, and putting them in the best homes you can, regardless of money. I think I've done that every time and have no problem sleeping at night.
I don't care who flames me for saying this, but I think I've bred a few pups who are better than their parents, or at least combine the best of each w/out the negatives of each, thus far. This is not just my opinion; there are several quite knowledgable people who have said this to me. Personally, I bred for myself, and I tried to improve on what I saw in the majority of dogs available; that's not to say that I have some egomaniacal vision that I'm going to "better the breed" for the whole world. But for the few who will ever have one of these pups, I think they'll be very happy with them. Too bad they have 10 at a time. If they only had one at a time, I would never sell a puppy!
"Too bad they have 10 at a time. If they only had one at a time, I would never sell a puppy!"
That's the truth Jenni!
...oops; should have read the second page of comments.
"I think most breed for various reasons other than improving the breed, most claim they breed to improve the breed but few indeed breed to improve the breed and a small percentage from the latter succeed in improving the breed. If I breed I will not claim I want to improve the breed, no fool would believe such a big claim on my part.
