Aren't most (if not all) the Military dogs of the "male" gender??
I've always been under the impression that they do not use female dogs for specific services.
BTW....I heard it was a pot belly pig, that aided in the final end of the whacko.....

No, they use males and females. I know a number of females who have been sold to the military, plus have talked to handlers of female dogs. I think males are more common, but they will use females.
I don't know if they spay the females or just deal with the heat cycles, or make that decision on a case by case basis.
