You just have to x-ray to know what's going on.  Of course they need to be more than just hip films - need to be from the side view also to see the knee, femur and side-view of hip - could be hips, could be pano, could even be a  front leg (sometimes it's the diagonal leg that is really the problem) - you simply don't know anything, and neither does your vet - without x-ray.

Well said Molly.
I don't know why someone would think that pano is hard to see on exrays?? It's pretty darn easy to see if you know what you are looking for! The edges of the long bones will be bright white. simple as that.
The whole point is is that you can speculate all day long and until you get the exray you won't know a thing. All pain meds did was mask the pain and what did that prove? Ummmm that she was in pain??? Just more money on the sale of drugs.

djc...thats why we come here and post here...it helps to get people from outside to give advice and reason of why and what should be done...I appreciate the input and glad I have a place to bounce my thoughts and concerns... you may be right about pain meds, maybe xrays should have been done right then and there..however she did not charge me for pain meds due to the fact that she knows the history of the dog so at least i am thankful for that...and since apt. is scheduled for sedation and xrays i may as well wait ...  :)

once again thanks... when it's close to home its hard to see a big picture... will definitely post updates...until than may as well wait and see what happens...

ok...had x-rays done today....just got a call from physician (will pick x-rays later when i pick up Bailey) but she has SEVERE Hip Displ.  (physician words) R hip only, L is fine....
so...I will post x-rays on Monday....but this news had just ruined the rest of my year......

I guess once i see how bad it is..i can go from there but vet told me its as bad as if she was looking at a 15 year old GSD w/ bad hips...severe arthr. and degeneration....

............ehhhh..........this sucks......

DJC, pano does not always appear on xrays. SOMETIMES it is easy to see, but unless you are a better reader of xrays than an ortho specialist's radiologist, it does not always show itself loud and clear.

Ladyfrost, please post xrays when you get them. Weird to have severe HD in only one hip. Except in cases of injury, I have never seen unilateral severe dysplasia- only unilateral mild. In severe, one hip may be worse, but I have never seen one good and one absolutely horrible- unless, of course, it was badly injured at some point.

Jenni....yeah..i am hoping vet exaggerated.....i doubt you remember when i first posted on here but Bailey had a beebee in her  hip area when i got her and started cleaning her up..at first i thought it was a tick or something but it was a hard ball of crusted blood, skin and fur in her hip, when i pulled it out she had an opening in her skin about 1/4-1/2 inch across when i broke up the encrusted ball inside was a shinny copper beebee... if that is the case and reason for hip issue that just pisses me off on a whole new level.....
I will post x-rays as soon as I can ......i am hoping its not as bad as she made it sound....

If she was favoring that leg when that BB was fresh, and she atrophied her muscle badly enough that the hip was subluxated, it's possible that what happened is the hip was "bouncing around" in there instead of being held firmly by muscle, and therefore really messed up the joint, wearing down the socket, remodeling femoral head, etc.

I had one do some damage to a previously good hip because of pano lameness.

Hard to say if that could be a contributor until we see the xrays. Fingers crossed for you guys.

The dog that I left behind in the divorce had OCD and I was involved in the diagnostic and initial stages.  He was on crate rest and meds and was doing well until my idiot X decided he shouldn't be confined to the crate.  That was pretty much where my marriage ended and he kept that dog, so as far as the outcome, I really don't know.  One thing I do not undrestand is why it's taking so long to do an xray?  The day I took my boy in, they did xrays and made the diagnosis the same day.  I'd be a bit upset if I had to take a lame dog back home and wait that long!  Diagnosing a problem in 90% of treating it and the longer it goes on, the more possibility another problem may develop.  I'd push getting the xrays sooner.
