Not really Julie; if his coat comes in as a 'long coat' the greatest lengths you will notice is lower down, on his sides and flanks, plus his chest and his backs of legs. Plus, to varying extent, on his tail, both in terms of length of hairs on the top layer of the tail, and in the length of the 'plumes' on the underneath of the tail.

He should not have too long hairs on his spinal length; that would mean the coat falling open with a 'parting' down the back - and, if you read the GSD Standard, that falls over into the extra long, 'faulty', 'open' coat (which frequently lacks undercoat and weather-proofing over large areas of the body, so less 'waterproof' and therefore incorrect, according to the aims of the breed's developer). [Still not acceptable in the Show ring, though I only add that cos its true, I know you said you were not interested in that side of the breed.]

This is a better photo from the p.o.v. of seeing coat development so far, but I still say this could turn out to be a stock coat. None of the L/C (langstockhaar) pups I've raised ever had coats that by 15 + weeks had such short hairs on their sides and legs still. They were all much 'fluffier' than this one. Also his tail confirms the first picture, not so much hair on that as I would expect from a L/C. But while he still has 'puppy coat' he will still be fuzzier than when he gets his adult coat through ( a while yet !); we will see ...

Hi Hund.
Thank you so much for all the detailed input.
Will post photos as he grows older.
It will be nice to know what the final outcome will be

he is now 4 months old. He has a very funny way of sitting! 🤣

Yeah we call that a 'puppy sit', most of them do it. He can be trained to sit up properly and squarely, but you might find he soon starts doing so by himself anyway.

Nice looking lad.

Yes Nan - I'm inclined to still think he may soon lose a lot of that fluff on his ears, and then it will be in line with the rest of his coat, which still looks too short to be a longcoat. [Sorry Julie, know you'd rather have a L/C !]
