AHAH I know it's a joke. I didn't think you were rude or anything. no worries.
K-9mom thequestion is how many of these "3 GSD bites followed by 1 Lab, 1 Dachsund, 1 Husky, 1 Labdradoodle, 1 Border Collie, 1 Cockapoo" were bite trained?
I'm just trying to make the point of how absurdly ignorant it is to blame dog bites on Sch training.
Well, I don't know about you but I personally blame schutzhund for putting out all those nasty ass bite trained cockers.
Louise,
Wow I thought I was the only one with cocker spaniel problems. Every time I walk my two GSD's around the neighborhood (they are obedience, agility, and protection trained) the only dogs that are stupid enough to venture out of their yards and into the "no man's land" of the street are spaniels and terriers. They charge at us with the ferocity of wild boars and about the time they enter my dogs' bite zone (6-12 feet) they get this look on their faces like, "Why the hell am I doing this?" Mine are on leash, the attackers are loose (often with their owners looking on) and there they are - with no legal recourse and no hope. But for the fact I was trained in leash control techniques in protection class these hapless assailants would be missing body parts.

As indicated by another above, statistics can used used for and against just about any stand. For instance, here is a link to dog bite statistics compiled by one, so called expert, for U.S. dog bite statistics. The GSD is mentioned a few times, by name. As indicated, most dog bites are by mixed breeds.
http://www.dogexpert.com/Dog%20Bite%20Statistics/DogBiteStatistics.html
One quote from this site:
"Mixed breeds and not pure bred dogs are the type of dog most often involved in inflicting bites to people. The pure-bred dogs most often involved are German shepherds and Chow chows." Notice that Chihuahua's, Labradors and Cockers are not mentioned, in the pure bred category (or anywhere else).
This site also states the following:
"The breeds most often involved in fatal attacks are Rottweilers and Pit bulls." Notice the word "fatal" in that sentence.
It also states this:
"Plumb estimates that when a pit bull bites a human, one in 16 (e.g. 1/16) will inflict serious injury; this contrasts with a ratio of 1/296 Dobermans, and 1/156 German shepherds." Notice that the GSD inflicts SERIOUS bites more often than the generally recognized unstable Dobermann's.
You see, it is not the Schutzhund trained GSD's that I and others are saying are the problem. It is the people who breed only from dogs that have a propensity for "good" biting, and for the "hardass" dogs(word borrowed from GARD). When you keep breeding for a specific trait, then you get that trait eventually, more often and more strong in the breed. It is the "breeding" for this that is the problem, with public perception.
Some have countered that that's where the obedience comes in, but I counter that argument with my statement above. That it is not the schutzhund trained dogs, but their offspring, which carry these traits and may receive some training, or be sold as pets. Most GSD's do not obtain complete training or titles. Additionally, obedience trained dogs are not robots and will and do make mistakes in obedience. I have watched enough highly trained military, police and personal protection trained dogs fail to out, or attack before given the command to attack, that it is obvious. How many schutzhund titles dogs bite before being commanded too, or fail to out? Plenty. How many get a perfect score on obedience? On the out?
Yep, statistics can jump up and bite you on the arse, if you're not careful. :) Now, watch out for those dangerous ankle biters. They can kill you (not really unless you are an infant or a really small women). :)
See? More killer cockers. Somebody ought to start telling those cocker breeders how to breed those nonbiting kind.
Do Right, the cocker people need you.
:)
I guess it went over your head........................Again.
"The pure-bred dogs most often involved are German shepherds and Chow chows." I read that as the NUMBER ONE pure bred dog involved in dog bites is the GSD.
Nice thread though AlleyDawg. Maybe next time.
