Tessj10, if Vicks has apologized for what he did to the dogs, my oops, I just don't remember reading it. Course that could be the old memory going .

I knew an old swamp cracker (his term not mine) who raised pit bulls for fighting. He and his cohorts were white. This was many years ago before pits were a nationally recoginized breed (AKC). His dogs had the best food, housing, and medical care. He went to church every Sunday and his word was his bond. He followed Cajun rules for fighting and said a good fighting dog is treated with dignity and should never be human aggressive (if one of his was, it was destroyed with a bullet to the back of the head, he said instant dead, no suffering, again his words). He got out of the fighting business because he said it was being taken over by "dishonorable imbiciles who brought drugs and crime into an honorable past time" (his words). I didn't find out about the pits until much later and he had already switched over to raising Black Mouth Curs (Curs are an incredible working dog, very intelligent).
He believed that he was doing no wrong in breeding and fighting his dogs. They were well cared for and (in his words) doing what God intended just like Border Collies herding sheep and Terriers killing vermin and so on. He was raised with dogs bred for specific purposes and no one could change his mind.
Education is the key. Incorporating culture and background with current knowledge and theory to educate people that there are different ways. If Vicks is able to take his experiences and educate others with similar life experiences that there are better ways, then this was not a waste.

For example, are we the rightous ones going to graciously allow him to work at McDonalds? How about DQ? Or are we going to be big and allow him to work for GE? Where do we draw the line and say as Gustov put it "sanctimoniously" allow him to work in a place that allows him to earn $60k and under, 70k and over but not above $100k?
How in the world did we appoint our selves to dictate how much money he is allowed to make in this country. I am pro LE. Pro accountability for criminals, but if they have served their time, paid their debt, then I must accept the fact that he or anyone else is allowed to continue the profession they were in. This is the United States, and last I knew I fought for the right for a man/woman to make a living the best they can. Only exceptions are sex offenders working with kids, Drug addicts working in a pharmacy or any other crime that puts a convicted felon in a situation that can lead to more victumization and harm. No connection between football and dogs.
As far as role models, If parents are allowing their children to make role models of todays athletes or movie stars or other entertainers, then they have some serious soul seaching to do. As a parent I monitored what they did and put up rules and guidlines for what was acceptable and not. This is not full proof, but certainly pays its dividends. I simply do not allow political correctness or any other garbage philosophy to dictate to me on how to raise my children. I am more than pleased with what they have done with their lives.
I wish Vick well. Hope he sees dogs in a different light. I have no intention on traveling to Mexico to tell them to give up something they have done for hundreds of years. Let the contiousness of the nation dictate that. The man was found guilty by his peers, sentanced, paid his debt, now let him do what he does best to earn a living.
