Thanks Jamille!

For anyone who were curious: A Harlequin. Almost looks like a giant Blue Heeler

We have owned 2 Beaucerons. Our last one was a male and we now have a female not quite one year old yet. They are VERY full of energy. I would not recommend this dog to anyone who doesn't have time to spend with it. We started her in obedience training and give her plenty of play time. It's very hard to wear her out.  That's the down side to having one. However they are very smart and easy to train.  They pick up the commands fast.  Beaus are very loyal dogs.  Both my dogs would follow me all over the house. They love to be with their owners. Even though my husband picked this dog she clings to me mostly. It can be annoying at times like when you want to use the bathroom in peace!  Truely a loyal and loving dog.

Where I go sheepherding with my dogs, the flock owner uses two Beaucerons to work the flock.   His two are from France and they are great herding dogs.

At the clinic I work, we have not been fortunate enough to see some well bred ones.

GoldenElk, You might want to contact Ron Carter. He is a very excellent and accomplished helper in New Jersey. He has had several Beaucerons that he also worked in schutzhund. He can give you very valuable insight. He is also on this forum occasionally. I will pm you his email addy.

I love these dogs...They're right up there on the list of dogs I would love to own (along with Kelpies, GSDs, Dutchies, and Mals).

I met one at one of my UKC shows and fell in love....they seem like such a great breed!

I wonder if the one with the  blue markings have skin problems ?  very interesting dogs. The dew claws are a baffling requirement ,what if they tear while working ? Wont they bleed alot ?

My mother has owned Beaucerons for years and I also own one.

The correct way to pronounce Beauceron is actaully to pronounce the c like an s...it should be pronounced  bo sih rohn.

Dobermans are not descendents of Beaucerons, they simply added some size to the breed in only a few breedings. Dobermans are derived from a variety of many breeds  including the old German Shepard which is now extinct.

Their dew claws actually serve no real purpose today but are actually the breed standard to have them. Back in the days when most dogs had them, they were used for a variety of reasons like protection, traction for running (also in herding) and gripping things (bones). Beauceron's dew claws could be considered an appendage and removal would actually require difficult surgery that has to be done as a puppy.  You should not remove a Beauceron's dew claws. The only reasons I could see it being done is if you actually go hunting with your dog on a consistent basis or are consistently putting your dog in places with high grasses and things of that sort otherwise, don't do it.

The merle color is not a disease of the skin, it is simply another color. There is nothing wrong with it, it simply just looks different. You rarely see merle Beaucerons.

You should not buy one unless you are have really researched all there is to know and not just about Beaucerons but dogs in general. You should know their complete history.

I always thought about getting a Beauceron too, however, when you look at Goldens Elks comparison to a working dog, there really is no comparison IMHO.  That workingline dog he picked is just gorgeous, and certainly stands out, - to me at least.   Anyone know who that dog is?

 Capone17,

What activities are you in with your Beaceron?    E.g.  , Schutzhund, agility, herding, Ring, etc.

Red Sable, that gorgeous GSD that you allude to is Iltis von der Wildsau, a pure DDR male, and a true black sable. If you think he's handsome in that photo, you have yet to see him in person. Truly, the epitome of the DDR type, and the breed IMO. Others may feel free to disagree.
