one cannot improve hip by using one potent dog for that.
it takes both dogs to be excellent, potent to pass that to offspring and sustain this approach with following generations.
if ones serious about improvement then dogs with questionable hip shouldn't be used in breeding at all.

in DDR x-ray become mandatory 1968 and such approach was used since then.

1968: HD frei 55% - Leicht 16.7% - MIttel 14.4% - Schwer 13.2%
1978: HD Frei 90% - Leicht 4.5% - Mittel 2.6% - Schwer 2.9%
1985: HD Frei 94.4% -Leicht 2.6% - Mittel 1.4% - Schwer 1.6%

@jdiogoc:

Thanks for the response. I made a thread some months ago asking about Hercules vom Grossen Ex because he was getting a ton of breedings and was curious if anyone had experience with him or his progeny, and what they were seeing with what he was producing, etc.
Surprisingly enough, or maybe not, no one responded. If he seems to be showing good hip improvements, that's another feather in his cap, so to speak.

My older female was a complete outcross genetically, with 5 generations of good hips on both sides of the pedigree. She x-rayed as mildly dysplastic in one hip at 2 years of age. It was heartbreaking!

That is so sad, and also very cautionary when it comes to the claim that "parents were fine so he's fine" or "he's IPO3 so he doesn't have any issues," both excuses I've actually heard for not screening a dog.
