SG ratings are given wothout titles in the 12 to 18 class. The dogs in this class are generally not expected to have a title. They should present themselves well in the ring with proper ring training for their age. 18 to 24 class dogs are not required to have a title but it shure helps if the dog has one and is breed surveyed. Ring performance should be a little better than expected in the 12 to 18 class. There is no obedience or any test other than the stand and ring performance. Over 24 months. These dogs must have a title and should be surveyed or someone will think the dog has a problem. The dogs in this class must pass the performance test which is basically the breed survey test, healing to an attack out of the blind and courage test. Typical ratings given to dogs that pass the performance test are VA, V, and SG. Those that don't pass the test are given ratings T1, T2, T3, T4 that are results of why the dog didn't pass. EZ ratings are given to dogs that are excused after the stand exam that are taken to the vet and reported sick. Most of the time the owners are the ones that are sick. The owners that pull their dogs without going to the vet are considered unsportsmanlike and their dogs are given an insufficient rating. Up until a certain age, about 3.5 (correct me if I'm wrong, it's late)years a dog can get a V rating without a survey. After that, they need a survey to V rate. VA qualifications are a little more demanding and are increasing. SchH2 or equvilent is required. Soon in order to receive a VA rating males will need to present a progeny group and I believe be HD and ED normal. Females will need to have whelped a litter.

Thanks DOG1! That's extremely helpful. Ones like you and others make this site what it should be. Thank You and all of you for your help! You say in the 12-18 month class as well as the 18-24 month class there is just the stand and "ring performance" which by this you mean strictly gaiting and the gun test? Dan

by hodie on 27 April 2005 - 05:04

Dan, Yes, I am from Colorado. And yes, in the classes up to 24 months, it is just gaiting, and the stand exam and the gun test (not for pups). And Dog1, I have some photos and some video to send you. Please email me privately with your address so I can get them to you. And thanks for taking that video of Donni!!! It took me 27 hours to drive home!

Hodie, I appreciate your info and looked up the videos as you suggested but am confused due to the variety offerred as to which would be best. Obedience only for now or should I indulge in beginning puppy bitework as well or? Thank You very much for your input I feel fortunate to have people with such expertise taking time out to share it with me and possibly others that read this board as well. Respectfully, Dan

Spaetzle, I’m intrigued! A system weakness exploited by hackers in conjunction with a trojan? Dan, A novice??? Playful little tease???

Dan, Your original question seemed to deal with aspects of showing the GSD. For that, I do strongly suggest you buy the 4 tape series called "The German Shepherd Dog". Ricardo Carbajal is the person who made these tapes with the companies help and they are very, very good. You will learn a lot. If you wish, since we have talked in the past, I might be willing to loan you one at a time with some assurance I would get them back. As for other tapes about bitework etc., the best way to learn about this is to belong to a good club or find a competent helper to help. You are not so far away you could not come here for a weekend and we could help you get started. Bernhard Flinks also has several excellent tapes out on building drive and focus. This is a critical component to training a young pup and I suggest might be more worthwhile at this point. The main point with any dog doing bitework is that the dog must always win, especially at a young age. I also insist on the development of a proper bite. Some dogs naturally will bite full, others not, but if one only rewards the good bites, almost all dogs can get a better bite with practice and patience. Again, email me off list and I can help you with this. This training stuff is a long haul, but it is important to begin and begin correctly so later on mistakes do not have to be corrected. By the way, did you get a pup? My Kevin Murrtal sired litter is outstanding and I have yet to sell as I am looking for show and working homes. I hope this helps.
