Max, The breed standard was written by the foundation breeders, respected people like Herr Captain. These breeders did their homework and learned about the ideal breed characteristics they wanted to see in future generations. They wer scholars of dog structure way before they even authored the breed standard. To suggest they were ignorant of dog structure is very insulting. The Captain's ideal dog was Horand I believe, a dog that very few today would even consider for breeding and a dog that would probably never even get a "g" rating or a breed evaluation by today's standards. Does that mean he was faulty, too much angulation, incorrect center of gravity as you have suggested? I don't think so. The SV standard was well thought out; every point has a purpose, some to set a correct breed type, some to insure the correct working temperament and structure, some are survival characteristics. White dogs are not permitted because white cannot readily be seen against the snow or in a group of sheep. The continued used of whites in a breeding program is detrimental to pigmentation. No longcoats, the length and texture is undesirable because it is not weatherproof, gets too wet and forms iceballs in the winter time. My primary breed discourages longcoats too because as an arctic breed a LC would never survive in that climate plus all longcoated puppies were killed by the Eskimos and not allow to reproduce. Other points of the standard are equally as important to the survival of the GSD. The plan for breeding the ideal GSD is in the standard, it is supposed to be the benchmark for everyone who ever breeds a litter. I don't understand why you are trying to malign the standard, if there were no breed standards, all dogs would eventually end up looking alike, there would be no distinct breed types. DNA is the same breed to breed, it cannot be used to determine a breed. The DNA of wolves is exactly the same as their canine cousins. Keeping this in mind, just imagine what the dog world would eventually look like should no one subscribe to breed standards and set out on their own. Just forget about the AKC standard, that has nothing to do with the SV standard which is what most on this board are interested in talking about. Have you ever even read the AKC standard? It's not too far different from the SV one. If all bred to either standard, the dogs would look an awful lot alike. The Am lines look the way they do today because people ignored that standard and convinced themselves that they were breeding the correct dog regardless of whether or not it conformed to the ideal dog per the breed standard or not. It's called being kennel blind, the eventual downfall of any dog breed. It's a lot easier to say the standard is wrong and my dogs are right than it is to breed the correct standard dog. We been talking about the arch in the toplines of the present GSD, some think its correct, some don't but no one has been able to quote one single thing in the current standard that allows for anything other than a straight back. Who's kidding whom? Breeding to the standard is hard, if it were easy everyone would be doing it. We certainly know that's not happening.
