I'm sure the pedigree mods can help with this...but a lot more pedigrees on this board would have registration numbers if AKC would make their 'dog lookup' easier to find!!

Grrr! They keep changing the website, and okay, it's been a few years since I've had to do this, but...it's still at PITA. If you search 'registration number' they will tell you that term doesn't exist. And 'dog lookup' returns over 100 results. But of course, they are all too willing to sell you a 5 generation pedigree, or - for a fee - let you register your dog!

Help, please?

If you search registration look up, it's a few links down in the results

Sunsilver,  I continue to post this regularly on AKC. If you read down you will see the easy way to get to AKC site.

Registration No.

Thank you!

Funny thing - a number of the dogs I tried looking up aren't listed, though the kennel is very well known, and one of the dogs was pretty much their foundation dog. Hmmm...

Some of the dogs are from the 1950's, so it could be just bad record keeping on the part of AKC. I did wonder if some of the dogs might be in the SV database, but then I saw the bitches were AKC registered, even if the stud was German registered.

The dogs were registered with AKC but not all dogs show up on the AKC website.  They would be in the older AKC Stud Books and possibly old Shepherd Reviews.

Huh, you think you folks have problems with AKC. LOL

The UK KC has installed, one year ago, a new IT system. Because, they say, the old computer system was no longer adequate to the task, with so many Registration applications and other queries being received. Now yes, more litters were being bred - and therefore more puppies to register, more new Kennel Names applied for, more pups changing ownership from breeder to buyer - largely because the demand went wild during our first and subsequent Covid 'lockdowns'. But it is unlikely that it was those which caused the installation of the new system, because planning and budgetting and tendering for the supply of that new system would have started earlier. More likely the KC looking to 'make a buck' with all their increased acceptance of 'designer dogs' onto the Activity Register, and other issues in connection with that expanding arena, was in the plotting.

Anyway, the new IT system was supposed to be better; it meant however we had to give up health and other research accessibility that was fairly easy to find under the old system, in favour of having to laboriously find that information on individual dogs and if you are not very 'computer literate' that is very discouraging. And much slower. That was the first problematic area of KC operation, but it soon transpired the new system could not cope very well with anything else either. Here Covid really did come into the picture because the KC wasn't considered 'essential' industry, most staff were therefore working from home, training for newer staff got interrupted, (though IMO that should have begun earlier), etc ... AND the new system did not prove equal to its task(s) in that a huge backlog of Registrations has occurred, but also it constantly makes the stupidest mix-ups & mistakes:

An example - a breeder has an established Kennel Name ('Affix') she's had for years, always paid to renew on time, etc. She registers a litter shortly after her DD payment for her affix for that year has been taken. She is then refused the names she wants on the pups "because she does not have a Kennel Name, so cannot use names all incorporating one particular word". Her Kennel Name is right there on the paperwork / computer form ! In some cases you can't put necessary info onto the online form because the forms are so badly designed. [Presumably by someone familiar with the IT but not familiar with the needs of the dog world ! ]    And then our main microchip registry - administered by the KC - also renewed its IT sysyem, and was also found to be making ridiculous errors, and taking forever to process requests.

And yet ... the parts of the system that involve processing of the many fees for various 'services' offered (eg kennel names, but also subscriptions to publications, copies of expanded pedigrees, etc), and those which contribute to the sale of Insurance, seem to be working normally.  Can obviously be very irritating for a breeder who can't get her pups papers completed and returned in time to give them to new owners (reputation-damaging), but still gets cold-called every two days about renewing insurance on the pups beyond their first free weeks ...

Our KC have, recently, started to seem a bit more genuinely apologetic about this whole mess, as the months have gone on. But at the beginning, they did not endear themselves to anyone because they displayed denial and a (not unusual) arrogance in their statements about what was happening. They are still not being very open about who supplied the new systems, or why they were selected.  NOT good PR.

AKC has some very archaic rules. for instance, you can be the breeder of record of a dog or dogs and can't get the dogs show record if you weren't the owner.

like some kind of state secret, which is ridiculous because every dog, owner and place of residence is listed in show catalogs.

by hexe on 10 October 2021 - 10:10

Rik, that never made any sense to me, either...then again, it doesn't make any sense to me that you can now buy a dog that's already been registered and change its registered name. Seems like that defeats the purpose of linking a name to a registration number.

by GSDHeritage on 10 October 2021 - 11:10

hexe, AKC allowing dogs to be registered that do not DNA back to their sire using the letter "Q"

"The dog’s registration number will start with the letter ‘Q’ and the dog will have competition and breeding restrictions"

then later giving them full registration papers these dogs can never be proven to be purebred dogs.

AKC Conditional Registration Certificate and Pedigree

A dog with Conditional Registration has some unknown ancestors. The dog’s registration number will start with the letter ‘Q’ and the dog will have competition and breeding restrictions. Below is a sample Conditional Registration Certificate, showing the special border and (in this case) an unknown sire.

AKC Conditional Certificate

Since these dogs are proven through DNA testing sire unknown to be purebred dogs they are not allowed to be on the Pedigree Database.  The Admin at this time are allowing dogs that were already entered by adding next to the Registration Number CONDITIONAL REGISTRATION for all future progeny.  It is important that members of the PDB know the reason the dog has this next to their dogs pedigree.

I'm sorry, but that just makes my head spin! I have NO idea what it means! Did you leave something out? The first sentence in particular is making me go HUH??? Should it read 'since these dog are NOT proven through DNA testing'?

Maybe it should read "Since these dogs are not proven through DNA testing to be purebred dogs, and the sire is unknown, they are not allowed in the PDB..."
