Folks, we are living in the 21. century.
Anybody who still believes in " people in X, Y, Z are all alike", are plain stupid.
I met German, American, Asian assholes, no real difference...

Besides that I don´t like dogs treated like livestock, but on the other hand I don´t like livestock to be treated like food.
Most people from India don´t eat cattle,
most Muslims don´t eat pork,
do you care?

You just need to take a look into OUR slaughter houses, into OUR cattle wagons, into OUR big farms.
Cages, way too small, during transport no water and heat, raised up with antibiotics, and on and on and on.

We would have the money and the infrastructure to change things in our own countries, but we don´t, "it´s just livestock".

OT Susie, do you view companion animals in the same light you view livestock raised specifically for food consumption??

I broadly agree with what I think is your point, mass production of animals for food can be done very badly in a lot of cases, having said that, research shows that consumers will put their ethics aside to save a few hard earned dollars.

I find this an interesting question drawing a part income from food production.

sorry for the OT.

Veal calves are a good example, Susie. Raised in hutches, kept upright in squeeze cages, fed only milk so they become anemia and their meat stays white.  They live this way for at least 4 months until they reach the size to butcher. Most in the US know that, yet they can't get enough veal. Factory farming is an ugly business.

as long as their is a mismatch between consumer moral outrage and consumer spending patterns factory farming is here to stay.

in fact as efficiency increases to match decreasing profit margins due to increased production inputs......

"OT Susie, do you view companion animals in the same light you view livestock raised specifically for food consumption??"
No, I have to differ, because I like meat.
It´s about the double standards we make day after day.
Most people I know want to buy cheap meat, no matter where it comes from, although they would be able to spend more money.
They don´t care - on the other hand they don´t want to see the mess.
Once again, I don´t want to eat dog, I don´t like the pictures, but what about pictures of our cattle, hens, calves?
We are different, but we are not better - and thinking about our possibilities (money, infrastructure, education ) we are even worse.

Blitzen, I don´t eat calves out of conviction, I don´t eat much meat at all, although I love a good steak. I try to buy locally from farmers I know personally. Costs more money, but it´s okay for me.

So are we supposed to be upset that this dog is in the shelter just because its a true black and red WGSL?
I for one feel bad for most dogs in shelters, not just the "nice" ones.

And nobody tried to eat them, they even built a shelter...
Kerschberger seems to believe that in the United States dogs or even whole litters never end up in a shelter...
On this board I had to learn the term "high kill shelter" though, but not in connection to Asia.
