I have a GSD that is wild about Salmon - either from a can that is rinsed 1st - or poached Salmon. Do any of you feed salmon and if you do - how is it prepared? I also feed Jack Mac from a can - rinsed well - but always feel there may be too much salt - any suggestions.....

Don't know what Jack Mac is, but all our dogs love salmon and I used to feed it regularly when I fed raw, but salmon is one fish that must be cooked beforehand... flukes maybe?? cooking gets rid of them..

Thanks for the answer - however you said use to - so you are saying if cooked it is ok to feed fresh (cooked) salmon. Jack Mac is a canned fish - high in omega and dogs love it.

Sorry, I meant when I used to feed raw, it was a staple part of the diet ..... now I just give it to them when ever I am cooking it and having extra left over.... Yes, it is fine as long as it is cooked. I've never heardof or seen Jack Mac, mackerel maybe?? Where are you?

I feed raw salmon to my dog. I live in Alaska, and it can be the cheapest meat to purchase from the fishermen. I have a freezer of it. I currently fillet and debone it, but I am looking for a commercial food processor that would make deboning unnecessary. As for MUST cook it...I eat it raw myself. I love sushi and sushimi. I also grill it, and leave it a bit "rare". The finer restaurants in this area will prepare it "rare" upon request.

I also feed raw salmon bones and all and never had a problem. The dogs love it!
