IT's hard to tell what do right away but I think that this is a hard subject for all. If we cannot tell if there something wrong with the Pups. I think that med, for this is just wrong. Why breed a bith with bad nerves. This must study before is spay or breeding. Let all agree this is a hard one. P.S dog are not human. If so there would no need for US

may be a little off topic, but WHO leaves mother with pups for 8 weeks????? certainly they need to have interaction with her through that time, but once they have teeth and are being weaned they should not be together ALL the time.

there is also a possablity that she doesn't feel safe. You said that she didn't have any problems with the first two litters, all was well and she raised them normally. What happend between the last normal litter and the one that she ate all 7 pups. Did he move or get a new dog ect. She might just feel that her pups are not safe and is over excited about something new?? I think Britney keeps them together until 8 weeks, my momma's don't want to be with the ALL the time after they get teeth. They will come in and play a little, but I dont' let that happen much because they dominate the alpha pups to much..... Heather

Maybe worth a try: The bitch maybe stessed out from the labor duration. Try this next time, stay with her the whole time of labor. Help her with the opening of the bags and as soon as she has the breathing take that puppy away from her ,dry it off good with a clean towel and place it in, say a shoebox with a heating pad underneath.Keep this up until she is finished. Then take her away from the whelping box and dry it out good, then place the pups in a pile in the center, let her back in.Make sure they are away from barking dogs and anything that would bring sound to disturb her into coming out.Check on her time to time and if she is doing good praise her while palming her head,"GOOD GIRL".Also feed her some extra meat like weenies,a pack a day! It has worked for me when I think they maybe a problem. And she will love you for it!

Charlie, perhaps you mistook my hyperbole for seriousness. For that I apologize. Spay a bitch with a tier bouchon? Not likely, I can't even find it when I want to open a bottle of wine, I doubt if I could find it for emergency surgery. In my time, I've heard of four documented puppy killing bitches. To three of the "breeders", it was important that the bitch keep reproducing. I know of only one female kept back from a litter who later went on to breed. She was also a puppy killer. One anecdote does not a statistic, make, but that was enough for me. There are so many absolutely wonderful bitches "out there", is it vitally important that we keep one individual reproducing even though there is something that is clearly wrong? Is it worth taking the chance that this is a temperament flaw and propogating it? It is not up to me to criticize nor judge anyone else's breeding program. I can only extrapolate how I would feel/behave/react in a similar circumstance. Since I don't breed without the intention of keeping at least one female back for my kennel, I don't have rooom in my plans to start "behind the 8 ball". As much as possible, I'm going to shoot for a good outcome by starting with the cleanest possible parents. I'm sorry that you, or your friend, did not get the outcome that you wanted from this litter. I'm sorry that my opinion upset you. But remember, it's JUST my personal opinion and not all that important in the scheme of things. [skipping merrily off to play among the daisies] JDN - US

ok.. what causes PPD (Post Pardum Depression) in Humans? Can dogs experience this? Temperament, what is everyone's definition of Temperament? Do you really think a normally healthy minded bitch, has a temperament issue because it unexplainably kills its young? I don't think so but what do i know. Heck, how many mothers have thought they wanted to kill their kids LOL but we dont do it because we know better... but a dog...remember they are still animals, no matter how domesticated we think they are. Is there a way to help a hormonal bitch for her next litter to not let this happen again? I have no clue why the bitches do this... and heard of it from a few friends whose bitches were sweeties.. i mean absolutely kissy huggy protection trained dogs.. with clear heads.. but hormones... dont wanna mess with them.. all them chicks that get that PMS thing.. its not a choice, its not their temperament... its damn hormones.. now do we excuse the hormone thing and over look it? its up to each individual case and the owners choice.. if there was a bitch who was outright mean, and had poor temperament in all areas of the word, and then ate her young.. well that would waive the old red flag for me.. but would someone be breeding a mean old bitch like that anyway? Regards, Dawnmarie

It's HORMONES people!! NOT temperament!!! Can you not read that she had 2 previous litters without a problem???? If it was temperment it would have been a problem all along.

To all you folks thanks a lot. Actually after I got this news from this friend I went there( my bitch is also having a litter)We sat thru the night to observe what was happening. We decided we would do nothing but observe only if anything happened. We found that there were two pups that were weak in the litter. The colour near the mouth was pale pink as against healthy pups that were a good shade of red. As we sat thru the night we observed that these two pups died one after the other. we did not interfere with them but just left them as they were when they died. The bitch knew that we were there and she also did nothing. We then broke for a cup of tea for which we had to go to the kitchen- it was a boys day out without the booze. When we returned after tea we found one of the dead pups missing. The kennel is non accessible and it was clear that the bitch had eaten the dead pup to keep her kennel clean. We buried the other pup. Thereaftere we are inspecting the pups on a regular basis and I am pleased to tell you that all the remaining pups are fine.No more deaths no more murders, this bitch is fine and a great mother.
