You are absolutely right HET. When the insurance board advisors review the breed again in consideration of banning homeowners with the breed from being insured, this is a visual that they will certainly remember. That's why it's important that the GSD enthusiast, owners, breeders, etc at least speak out. Now I try to minimize drama but then again acts like this certainly don't warrant a "hush hush". Here is what I wrote to CNN: The use of a German Shepherd dog to depict this kid's mauling was very misleading. I am proud owner and of quality European German Shepherds; loveable yet courage animals. Ordinarily any dog can become vicious under the wrong care and no dog is immune to it. My problem with your headliner is the German Shepherd is already in the process of being labeled a VICIOUS DOG in several states making homeowners unable to get insured, etc. Your headliner did nothing more but continue a erroneous stereotype on a breed that had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with this incident. There were plenty of mongrels (mutts) you could have used rather than taking a breed that is already facing publicity for something that is more based on poor pet ownership. An apology would help or simply taking the photograph from the headliner that has probably already done harm to those viewers already afraid of dogs. This did nothing more but make them more leery of the German Shepherd Dog. CNN should take full responsibility for manipulating the public like this. But this isn't the first time is it CNN????

Grandma should at the very least be charged with risk of injury to a minor. As for Shepherds getting a bad rap? your right they do and with the numbers to back them up.Before you all go wild on me hear me out.We are talking one of the most well known breed of dogs in the world along with that title go things like we are talking about right now.Sad fact is, the more you have of something the greater the chance of something happening good or bad is.Showing the Shepherd when it was not infact a shepherd that was involved in the incident being reported is poor reporting true and I have no idea why they did that.I have been in the Animal Control field for 10yrs and then some and I assure you have done my fair share of dog bite investagations involving German Shepherds and every other breed you could possibly think off. Here is a rather dated list(can't find my newer one)of Risky dogs American Staffordshire terrier,Boxer,Bull Terrier,ChowChow Doberman Pincher,German Shepherd,Great Dane,Rottweiler and last but not least the Siberian Husky. The source of this info is the Insurance Information Institute How many of you lie to your insurance companies about what kind of dogs you have?and be honest about it, or how many of you pay extra on your home owners so you can continue to have your dogs on the property? How many of you have had to switch insurance companies or attempt to after they found out one way or another that you did/do in fact have one of the above mentioned dogs?I guess what I am trying to say is regardlees what kind of dog it is and trust me I love my shepherds more then I like most people they are still animals, anybody that trusts their animals alone with anybody not able to defend them self from injury or death are fools,no dog is 100%trustworthy and people get themselves in trouble thinking that way. I trust my dog, he would never do that, not my dog, he's such a good boy,he makes sure nobody comes near my children....heard them all, then something happens and the excuses start,it's hot out, they must have been teasing him,the female next door is in heat and it made him crazy,I don't know what happened, but it's not my dogs fauls, they must have stepped on his paw..........and then the law suits start. So go ahaed,be pissed of because they showed the shepherd and write the letters, just remember to also be adult enough to know that no matter how much we love and care for our dogs they are NEVER EVER 100% safe, they are indeed animals and are UNPREDICTABLE.Well, that is enough babbling from me,you all have a wonderful day and I'm off to look for bad dogs.

Charlie your post does have some merit but let's clear up the point on my post. The headliner depicted a German Shepherd. The true aggressor here was a mongrel(mutt). I hate to blatantly say this but just think if you saw an ad concerning a murder. Let's say the headliner showed some estranged teenager on it. What begins to run through your mind? Perhaps something like , "Wow! These teenagers today?" or "Another teen murderer" or something to that extent. It's human nature to immediately coincide the picture of such an ad with our intepretation of the event. In this instance they put a German Shepherd. For all the viewers who say the headliner, they get immediate thoughts on the dog. For those on the insurance board or even perhaps current and former animal control workers, they say, "Oh another German Shepherd..." That's my point.... My point is not to say there are not German Shepherds out there capable of this. But the media shouldn't put erroneous pictures like this to give "perception" That would be like showing your favorite NBA team with the championship trophy in their hands and the real winners were the opposite team. That's the whole point of graphics. To coincide with the advertisement. It shouldn't be to make the reader perceive something incorrectly or mislead this. My point is also not to debate this subject but to make GSD owners, breeders, etc aware of how this affect the dogs we care so much about. I know... I'm uninsured at the moment because of biased stuff like this.

I'm not sticking up for the media in any way shape or form, can't stand any of them myself to be totaly honest with you. I did not see the story or heading in question, my guess it the story broke, the first dog they triped across that looked mean enough to do something like that at the time was this poor shepherd....Freakin media does whatever it has to do to make a story deadline.....The reporters was probaly like, what the hell, a dog is a dog.....story done and in the paper the next morning.......Sucks

One thing to take note of is that the story on CNN's website does not contain this photo. The link we followed above is in conjunction with AIM or America Online. The photo is linked to the story on CNN's website. I think AOL deserves a few of these letters you have all written, as well. What a piece of junk this AOL site is.
