Link works fine. Well done. He's surely younger than 8 months in the photo though ?

I don't 'work' so will leave your question to others to answer; but his ancestry has a good number of IGP / SchH
qualified dogs in it, so maybe that's the route ? Of course, it will also depend on which sports etc are most easily available to you, where you are located and how many Clubs are accessible to you. Just preferring one working discipine over another may not be the answer as you'd be better doing it with the support of other handlers ?

Better question is, what kind of work can he do? I dont know the dog so I cannot answer that question, but, he may be good for a sport activity, or even real life type of service. Figure that out first, then look for what is around you that could offer you what you need.

With a GSD you can do everything!!!

- All the ring sports: IPO/IGP, French Ring, Mondio, Campagne, NVBK, KNPV, Big Russian Ring, PSA...

- Herding

- Any type of Search & Rescue: in water, buildings...

- Any type of tracking

- Agility

- Obedience and tricks...

- Dog dancing

- Flyball, frisbee...

Even a little bit of hunting, you might not be the best, but any GSD is able to retrieve well.

The most important is for you to enjoy and for your dog too.

But more seriously, the best dog's sport is the one you can practise in the club near the place where you live and xith a good trainer.

H89,
You cannot do everything just because a dog is a GSD. They are all individuals. An individual dog needs the traits and nerves to excel ,or even be able to do certain tasks/sports. How did you come to your conclusion that a GSD can do everything?

H89, I, just like apple, would love to know how you can anything with a GSD....maybe you can fill us all in.
Genetics will largely determine which way you go with a dog and if you want to go a certain, definite route, you better pick a dog with the genetics you need for that endeavor, but, I am listening...tell us how that works.

by Hanaki89 on 22 February 2021 - 08:02

"Genetics", what's that? I am sorry it is the first time I hear this word!

So you have a GSD with a "most likely IPO pedigree", so please go to IGP as everybody. Thank you.

...

Just to remind you the question was: "What type of work should I do?". So the answer is: anything. You can do most likely everything with your dog.
If you want to win, that is an other question. In herding all the border collies will be better than you, in water rescue all the newfoundlands will be better than you... And so on.
If your GSD has a lot of drive and want to bite the sheeps like some malinois, yes maybe herding is not for you.
You can go to IGP because it is a very good sport and it is German like your dog, but you have a lot of other options, just try and enjoy together, you and your dog.

Genetic will make a dog more able/capable in a specific sport/work. That might save you a lot of time and energy. For sure with your GSD he might be more simple to train in a ring sport than in herding for example. The previous people who answered you are right too.

H89, you have never heard of genetics before? This is a much longer answer then I care to get into here, but, for clarity reasons, this person's dog, may or may not have the proper genetic abilities to get involved in anything, none of us know because none of us have seen or tested this dog.
IGP is not a ring sport and when was the last time you saw a GSD compete in the NVBK?

by Hanaki89 on 22 February 2021 - 10:02

So if we need to wait the DNA profile of the dog to make a simple answer to a simple question we will wait for it.

If you want to help to complete the little list I made, I might have forgot few things, you are very welcome.

Do you prefer "peotection sports" instead of "ring sports", or maybe "bite sports"? If it is so much important I can change it. But it is true that technically Campagne and BRR are not "ring sports" too.

H89, no, I prefer to have the owner look at their dog and determine what kind of work the dog is suited for. DNA does not tell you about what type of work genetics a dog has inherited.
Next, I have zero interest in completing a list of everything a dog can possibly get involved in, without knowing the dog.
Finally, I prefer nothing since its not my dog and I have no idea what its suited for.
