The good range is between 5-12 ng/ml. Ovulation usually occurs around 8. Oocites takes 2 days for proper maturation, so the good time is 48-72 h after progesteron is between 5-10 ng/ml. 72 h is the best for the maximum number of puppies. If you have progesteron level of 2, you should repeat it after 2 daYS. in 2-3 days you should be in the good range, so wait 48-72 h, then mate your dog!

IMO, regardless of the type of breeding you are doing, would you not want to  *confirm* ovualtion??? The timeing and predictions and mates in the future if you can establish a better pattern will be valuable to you in the future and now if you not only try to predict WHEN to breed but that the bitch has and does indeed ovulate. Thus, if there is any question now or later as to that ..well you would have the answer. It is like have the stud semen tested/analisis as well .. then you have no question about it later.. especially fi you are going to all this rigamarol to breed= ? frozen, unatural breedings etc.  Best wishes.

If a breeder finds the exact day when a bitch has reached 2ng, why do you suggest they keep testing(honestly interested, not being a smart a@@)? I find it has worked out very well for myself & other breeders I know, to only test until 2ng is reached, then plan the mating 5 days from there.

I believe the school of thought is that there is no need to confirm ovulatiion AND that getting a P of over 5 ng/ml is not necessarily indicative of ovulation just starting.

The thought is that n=2.0 is more indicative of ovulation  after two days than P=5 is for ovulation has just taken place.

If P=10, it is very likely that ovulation has taken place, but when is not reliable.

Obviously one must do more than one P test.  We did four.  The first two were two days apart and showed the level beginning to rise and the last two were back to back with the final one showing she was in the range for ovulation on that day.  When you are using frozen, you must do everything possible to get it right.

Actually, with natural mating and AL with fresh semen, one will almost never need to do four P-test.

With frozen AI, one would likely need 4 or more.

With fresh semen, often just one P test is all that is needed. Often only two is already quite ideal. One should think about it.

If the stud is available on short notice and P result is same day while-you-wait, just one P test on day 9  after seeing blood is very helpful already.

For this single P-test at day 9,

If less than 1.0 ng.ml, soonest LH surge is after one day and soonest best mating is five days. So just waiting five days for first mating will rule out the great majority of chances for failure.

If about 2.0, wait four days

If about 4.0 wait two days.

If about 10 to 20, mate at once.

With just one P-test at day 9, all except the extreme fringes (very early ovulation or very late ovulation) are ruled out for breeding with fresh semen

I think far too many P tests are taken.

There is almost no way to resaonably interpret 4 P test results, except if the first two are very low. You start very early for fear of a very early ovulation.

Say if you get 1.5, 3.5, 7, 13 for the four tests two days apart, what conclusion can you draw from these numbers?

One can say that about halfway between the first and the second test, P was 2.0 ng/ml = LH surge.

What can one say about the day when P=7 or the day when P=13? not much

by HighDesertGSD on 17 October 2012 - 22:10

Actually about P=4 ng/ml is most indicative of start of ovulation. The process of ovulation lasts one to two days.

P=10 is not most indicative of start of ovulation, perhaps the end of ovulation.
