and proud to say so.  I used to be ashamed to say it mainly because of this website...alot of people criticize BYB's here so I mainly troll the message board. But let me tell you why I'm proud to call myself a BYB.
My brother always had GSD's & I always wanted one but friends kept offering other breeds like our beloved Great Dane, my Rhodesian Ridgeback, our Husky mix, etc.  When we retired I told my husband I wanted to buy some land and raise German Shepherd's, so that's what we are doing!
I did my research before buying, I spent a lot of time on this messageboard asking questions (under "Newbie"), and we talked to a lot of breeders before buying our male.  Then, when he was around 9 mos old, I called another breeder who I trusted and had made many phone calls asking questions and looking into his background, to get a female.  We faxed him our male's pedigree and he called back about 3 mos later and said he had a compatible bitch for our male and he didn't call it wrong cuz there hasn't been a bad pup out of the 3 litters they've produced.  Most of the buyer's have stayed in touch through e-mail and let me know how their GSD is doing and they send pictures.  We don't put out junk or sickly pups.  They get their shot's on time and I start with the wormer when they're 4 weeks old when I supplement mom's feeding with food.  The pups are raised in my dining room where I can observe them constantly and have, so far, been able to place the right pup with the right family because I know each one's personality and temperament.
All 4 of our dog's are part of our family, 2 of them spend most of the time in the house during the day, the 3 females sleep in the house and the male sleeps outside cuz he doesn't wanna come in!   He want's to patrol his yard. My adult son said the other day, that I treat my dog's better than I treated him and his sister when they were growing up, I told him that they (the dog's) never said they didn't like what I was feeding them for dinner, never told me no or said that they hated me and they always greet me like they haven't seen me in a year!!!  All a person has to do is come in my house and they can tell that it's a "dog's home."

Anyway, I just wanted to get this off my chest and say that all BYB's aren't bad....it's just that some give us a bad name and everyone always remembers the negative things they've heard.  Some are in it "just for the money" and they're the negative stories people remember.  I've run into a couple of those people and I told them to lose my phone number cuz I will not sell them a dog to breed the life out of!  (We only breed our 2 females once a year).   Our dogs are part of our family more than they are pets so if that is part of being a BYB, then so be it....that's what I am!

Sounds you did your research to breed responsibly. What are the pedigrees of your male and females?

Most breeders are bacl yard breeders because it is not a polite thing to do the the front yard!

Kalibeck

My beloved Kali came from someone who had 5 acres & a few well researched dogs...I choose to call her a 'hobby breeder', because her dogs were all health checked & she was always there for any question or concern. And not only would she take back any unwanted pups, although she only had to once....I do believe that if a pup of hers wound up in a pound she'd probably beat the tar outta the owner, too! LOL! And she's a granma, & she's a feisty little thing as well. I aspire to be a hobby breeder myself, some day. jackie harris

Don't let them bother you BYB. That being said.... have a plan, have a purpose, have standards. Just don't be part of an ever growning problem. You have a responsibility, never forget that. Moons.
