Rik

Another thing you can do, but takes two people. When your pup is old enogh to go for walks on the leash, one person takes the leash and the other walks ahead. Ocassionaly stop, praise and offer the pup a treat, then start walking ahead again. The pup will very quickly learn to pull into the leash to get to you. At first he may be rowdy, but do not correct or be harsh, just walk.

It is also good to use a sound that the pup begins to associate with you. Anyway, this is how I do it.

Here is a pup at 6 mo. that I started at approx. 3 mo. doing what I described. He did well, even in his first show.

Notice on Rik's puppy the correct posistion of the head and neck, carried almost level, not as has been stated here held high. Holding the head high will create a hackney motion at the front.

weight, don't be over weight.  The picture I would use is that of a great sprinter.  Good weight for many vets, pet oweners, etc etc will only have you 10% over where you want to be.

WHY ARE POSTS BEING DELETED ??????

by Jenn on 30 October 2010 - 23:10

Actually I didn't delete my post at all, I guess some of us just can not handle the basic truth of it all. and just to go back on the books my comment was " just dislocate it's hips and teach it to walk in a circle" As I said unless this post is AKC approved I guess it will only get deleted yet again but I really feel that strongly about how SHOW is KILLING our GSD....just look at them TRY to walk!

by bazza on 31 October 2010 - 06:10

Jenn, has this opinion just arrived in your head? as your comment yesterday on the Vom Bad Boll lines kinda says differently. The dog you commented on is most definitely  SHOW, and somehow I don't think he has a problem trying to walk!!! Also had a look at your web site, maybe you should keep your worries for your Dachshunds, I believe they have more trouble with spines than show dogs have " trying to walk". Also maybe take a look at the Shepherds you have before commenting on show!!

I have shown dogs for longer than many of you have been around. I can not think of one breed that is improved after a few generations of breeding for show first. It is not just GSD, it almost any breed one can name that has been turned into a show breed.

Didn't see the comment, but I will say I feel Jenn is much more correct in her view than I was at the same stage in life. As a matter of fact, we have exchanged views, and I feel she goes in a good direction for the GSD as a breed.

But, the OP is obviously a new person asking advice. I will assume he/she is an adult capable of making their own decision. And if I have advice to offer, from experience, I will do so. And I hope others will also.

best,
Rik

Bazza...everyone knows you can't find an American bloodline with out show blood there somewhere....however take a closer look at my dogs...there are NO sloped backs or bad angels in thier few show blood lines. As for my Dachshunds....I don't worry at all about them with ANY back issues, I RAW feed and they are some of the strongest dogs sincethey have had a better way to grow proper. They to come from a long hunting line that has not been bred down for show. The Dachshund too suffers this fate from breeders..that's why the back issues. I feel it's an awareness not many have and reallyshould before our actual working GSD breed goes extinct. Rik thank you for getting it! AWARENESS!!!!!!!! HERE
