To rephrase the original question, which breed has the best usable hunt drive between the GSD, Malinois, and Dutch Shepherd? Seems to me like the answer I'm getting here and talking with trainers in person is the GSD. Not necessarily what I wanted to hear but that seems to be the consensus.

The dog will have some big shoes to fill, my Czech female had a trial this morning, did very well on a difficult, windy FH2 track, immediately after got called to a search, brand new location we'd never been to, worked that for a solid hour and a half, pointed out the person suspected of having contraband, a single prescription pill, then did a short article track and now acts like she hasn't done anything all day. I need another one like this but without the health problems.

generally speaking GSD, but comes down to the individual dog, simple as that

Watched a K9 trial recently. A couple GS and DS competed, both mostly Malis. Although a portion of the Malis looked to be crosses. That the majority were Malis is indicative of being a more suitable breed for the street, doc or combat zone…is debatable.

nothing to add, other than what a very good thread. I did attend a LE trial a few years ago in my area. probably a couple hundred dogs from several states. not sure if they still do these.

anyway, dogs from lots of back grounds/breeds. the top scoring dog was from Chattanooga, Tennessee and the handler was the K9 trainer for the department, don't remember if it was city or county.

the dog was described as a "Dutch Shepherd" and also female. I was with Fred Lanting, so as usual, he was questioning, interviewing everyone he could for future articles and research and I was fortunate enough to sit in.

Also, Fred asked how they got their dogs. The trainer said they get them from brokers here in the U.S. and if the dog doesn't work out, they can return them.

the jist I got was that in LE, nobody really gives a sh*t about breed, pedigree, registration. just what the dog can do.

Rik, the bottom line will always be, "can that dog work"? Pedigree means nothing to most handlers, neither does paperwork, AKC, CKC, etc.
Chances are good the name of the dog will be changed as well, so...We were in Alabama a few years a go and when we pulled in to the hotel parking lot, I noticed several police cars there, including a K-9 car.
I took my dog out of my van to let him run around and strech his legs after a 12 hour drive. Cops looking at me, so, I politely asked the handler what kind of dog he had...you know what he told me?
"I got me an ass eater boy"...I started laughing and told him I have never heard of that breed, but, he had no sense of humor nor did he ever tell me what breed he had.
I, of course, looked up ass eater and could not find anything related to a dog, but, maybe I did not look hard enough.

well, HD, my only experience being youtube, I think the "ass eaters" are the dogs that can't be controlled or called off and end up with the lawsuits or coverups. I did see a few of them at the trial.

I also saw many very well trained dogs that were deployed and called off before engagement. part of the test.

Rik, I know he was being a smart ass and wanted to let me know he had a "bad ass" dog, I just could not help laughing when he said it as other images entered my mind..
I still wish I could have seen that dog, at least tell me what breed the ass eater is?

In a past life a few years back we completed commercial building search with a couple felony arrests as a result. The long time K9 handler who assisted us had a good looking new dog, a German bred GS with Sch title. His older, close to retirement k9 looked like a Mal/GS x. Handler stated to me might have to wash the
new GS out because he wasn’t confident in his aptitude for apprehension, even tho his nose was not in question. Words to the effect, “the dog lacked the craziness” sometimes required for the job. Of course this had nothing to do with breed, pedigree etc. I found out later the GS was doing well in his new career as an arson dog with the FD.
