Im set on what Im looking for at this point, only interested in Malinois or possibly Dutch Shepherd breeders, no adult dogs, only want to deal with a breeder directly. Dont really care about protection work, would be a plus but that is at the very bottom of the requirements I have in mind.

unless I missed something very obvious, the whole purpose of the Mal/Dutch Shepherd, etc is LE/Military work. of which detection is a very large part. Explosive, drug and many other needs for detection.

The people I am familiar with know exactly what is required of LE/Mil dogs and test them rigorously so as to breed the best to the best.

and, yea, those requirements are quite stiff. as in, we paid $xx,xxx for this dog and it 's just not cutting it, so send us another dog or a refund.

and another yea, anybody can donate a dog to LE.

just not any dog can become a certified LE dog. and for anyone to suggest otherwise is ridiculous.

and please name a department that's operating with a dog with no certs. that's Jackie Chiles dream.

but,

that's just moo,

Im really not getting the whole claim that mals arent good at detection work. Its getting to the point where mals are by far the majority with the law enforcement and private detection handlers I train with. But almost all of them get dogs from brokers that are older and partially trained to some extent, either way they dont know much about individual breeders or pedigrees. A few SAR handlers I know have rescue mals that are nice but that wont work for me for various reasons I wont get into, neither will an older dog from a broker.  This is why Im asking about breeders or particular lines.

I havent heard of any dogs working in law enforcement not being certified.  That being said not all certifications are equal.

From liability and prosecution standpoints, PD, SO, HP, etc. can't use uncertified K9 teams. Training and other documentation has to be properly maintained and the handler better know everything on every line and be able to explain everything technically and legally in court. And demonstrate. Once a K9 or handler fails in any of this, the team can be beaten in court, at least until documented retraining and third-party recertification. In these cases, in-house/training group certifications may be an issue, no matter how well trained and proficient the dog, handler, and K9 team are.

not really getting who said mals aren't good at detection Astro. if they are certified, they have proven what they are good at. some of course may be better at some things.

If I was in the U.S. and wanted a mal, I'd contact the guy in florida that does all the training videos. can't think of his name. there are also a couple of posters on here in Europe that specialize in Mals.

I did a google of top mal breeders in the U.S. and got some pretty interesting results.

good luck,

Rik

@Rik I believe you are thinking of Ivan balabanov. If there's anyone that knows about malinois lines, it's him.

nicole, thanks. that's him. It's been a few years and I wasn't even close to coming up with the name. It was driving me nuts. :)
