Eska, my black female GSD will be 10 months old on the 3rd of June.

She had her first heat at the start of April, at 8 months.

Yesterday, I noticed a fairly large glob of slightly greenish-white discharge hanging from her vulva. I wiped it with a tissue, then sniffed it. It did not smell very good.

Pyometra generally develops about 8 to 12 weeks after a heat, and we are right in that window now. Anyone ever heard of it developing in a bitch this young? I did have a friend's bitch get pyo at just over a year old. What Smile

If that's what it is I have to be the unluckiest person alive as far as my efforts to breed a litter. My first female x-rayed dysplastic at 2 years (okay, it's mild, and one hip only, so I can still work her...) My second had a really crappy, spooky temperament, and was rehomed. And now this...

I have high hopes for this girl. Her structure and temperament are pretty much just what I was looking for. I'll be heartbroken if I have to spay her. Yes, I know pyo can be treated, but the risk of re-occurence is very high, and because of that, they recommend you breed the female on her next heat. My friend did have 2 successful litters after her bitch's pyo was treated with prostaglandin, but she had to keep her on antibiotics throughout the entire heat and pregnancy. For the third litter, she decided to go without the antibiotics, and she lost the whole litter to infection late in the pregnancy. It was heartbreaking, and very, very expensive!  Sad Smile

I certainly don't want to breed her until she's x-rayed and titled, and has proven she's breed-worthy.

I had one @ approx 11 mo. after her first heat. had to be spayed. she was as nice as could be hoped for (sire multiple BSP winner, dam also did well, both V rated).

so no, you aren't the unluckiest person in dogs, but you could be running a close 2nd.Omg Smile

hope all goes well for her. I do feel your pain also.

Well, I'd check it out pronto, but not panic about the future yet. A dog could have an infection without it being pyo. Could be vaginitis. Keep us posted.

I called the vet. He says it's nothing to worry about. I'm not convinced... :(

Will be keeping a close eye on things over the weekend!

Yes. Common? No, but I do know of it happening. I agree with Jen--have it checked, but don't panic about what lies ahead. Won't do any good anyway, since there's nothing you can do to change it. But I'd at least want a smear looked at and an antibacterial vaginal flush, if nothing else...though a course of antibiotics would be preferable if the discharge has a foul smell to it.

I would not trust a diagnosis by a vet, over the phone.

I would do culture and sensitivity, right away.  Don't wait for more trouble.  A vaginal flush for sure after culture is taken.  Good luck  Nan

So, a friend of mine snapped a photo of the discharge, and posted it in a German shepherd group on FB.

She's now BANNED from FB as a result, as some IDIOT complained about her posting inappropriate NUDE photos!  Angry Smile

HOW RIDICULOUS CAN YOU GET???  Bat

Yeah, C&S was my thoughts exactly. I'd even take the frikkin' swab myself if I were still nursing, and all the vet would need to do would be send it to the lab!

'Nude'...so now dogs are nude?

SS, I had a Malamute bitch that pyo'd on her 1st season at 9 months. I had her treated and she did well and went on to finish her AKC CH and whelped a nice litter of 7. I only bred her one time,  had her spayed when she was around 5 and she lived to be 14 1/2.
