On 2006 I was in Dubai for one year ,during which time I was given a one year old GSD namely GOODBOY by a friend of mine to look after during his absence at Abu Dabi for approximately the same period. GOODBOY was a bit aggressive with strangers & it took me 2 weeks to befriend him then later on & for the rest of the period we became very close to each other.
Now we have not seen each other for approximately some 3 years, next month my friend who decided to move to Egypt for good, will send me GOODBOY to stay with me for one month before his arrival.
The big question now for you experienced ones DO YOU THINK HE WILL REMEMBER ME after 3 years & more???
I have said before that he is a bit aggressive with strangers so should I open the crate & receive him normally with no problems or should I take some precautions???

Yes, he will remember you fine. Actualy, he will remember your smell/odor first, then the rest of you.
As far as what he will do, hard to say. If he was your buddy then, he will be friendly again. Just act normal, Oh, it's you again, long time no see, how are you, without the big fuss, and it will be okay.

Might sound silly, but how about sending something that has your scent on it to your friend that can be put in with the dog during his trip to help him remember. Say an old pair of socks etc.

AandA, that is a good idea...something to jog his memory but I agree with Adi. The dog should remember tarek by smell. He may just make a fool of himself when he finds his old buddy after all these years.

Will he remember you I think he will not, a Dog can remember but three years is a long time and it was not that you had him for a great length of time so do not be disappointed if he does not right away
I know over here a Guy had his dog for four Years from a Puppy he reared it well Then he sold it
He had to go to the Guys place who bought the Dog some three months later the Dog did not want to know him total,
That took him by surprise
I could go into what a Dog looks for and what makes them what they are but everyone would differ on this board,
However in the last 4 months i have seen two ScH3 dogs come into our Club to new owners ages 3 and 4 years old
Within 2 weeks of working with these Dogs the Two new Owners were working them and getting responses from these two Dogs as if they had reared them from Puppy hood
I know the Dogs will go through the motions of there training, but the way the Dogs reacted to there new owners went deeper than that
Meaning a Dog will settle down if you are Kind, Calm, Patient , Feed it, Walk it then you will soon be that friend to that Dog, That is all they ask of us Humans Nothing More
Yet we ask so much more from them

i got a dog from someone and they hadn't seen each other in 5 years. When they did see each other again, my dog did her jump and sniff everyone cause we were at a sporting event and then she runs back to me. Well she sniffed her, and turned to get to the next person and just stopped dead in her tracks and turned into a squirming little puppy at her feet.
She recognized her and remembered. The look on my dogs face said everything, and the group of 6 or 7 of us could all see it.

I agree; I think the dog will remember you as well. I've been in similar situations and they've always remembered me. Make sure and check back in and let us know.

He will remember you 100%. My friend gave me his female 6months. After 2 years they met and she was in joy to see him.
She is also aggressive and will bite first if she does not know the person. Don,t worry Good boy will remember. Plse get back to us with your reunion experience. You do not need to send him anything prior to your meeting. Dogs have good memory.
Good luck.

They remember, for giggles one day, I was wrorking in the office and my male came in to say hi to get a quick pet and on his way out I said his call name very softly he swung around so fast and gave me this look, like you know. He had not been called by his call name in 5 years.

In my experience GSD's do not forget. I've seen them respond to people they haven't seen in years with joy and, if frightened by that person, fear.
