IT depends on what you want the dog for.  If all you want is a gsd as a pet-either, IF the temperament is correct.

If you want to do conformation-show lines.  If you want a service dog, more likely show lines than working lines.    If  you want to actually work, trial, and compete in a dog sport like schutzhund,  working lines.

Are there any lines that coexist? That do both?

by Bob McKown on 02 December 2009 - 18:12

There are no show lines only dogs that don,t fit into the description of "working dog" that the breed was created for.

"Chris had hit an emtpy car that in turn hit a drunk driver whom was standing behind the car on the Grand Central Parkway.......Chris went to a friends house and noticed that there was blood on his car and immediatley returned to the scene of the accident."

No idea who this is or what happened, but if this Chris only hit an empty car with a man on the other side of it, how did his car get blood on it?  Just curious.

In reality there are Workign German Shepherds as they where created to do, then we have what we have made as show dogs. Even in looks they do not resemble the look of the true German SHepherd like the working lines do. But if you want a nice pet to just be a house dog then I am sure they are fine, may be even better than working lines for that as they may be calmer and have way less drive and  instinct. The bred was created to work ... so sport, schutzhund, herding, Protection are what they where bred to do. I know of no one who has successfully crossed the lines and they be able to catually work.  Pet or not the hips will also play a factor, a dog with bad hips can be hard to live with if you care for him to see them in pain and unable to get around as they get older.
