My dog, who normally doesn't get into trouble, just got into the garbage and ate a cooked chicken carcass. I had just removed the wings, legs, thighs and breast meat from it -it was still warm! I am so worried about this. Any advice...or encouragement?

The dog will probably be fine, assuming it chomped bones up well. Just watch him/her and perhaps even consider giving several slices of bread to help catch the bones and push them through. You will know if there is a problem soon enough, but you will probably not have any trouble with the dog. That being said, one does not want dogs eating cooked bones because they become more brittle and break up differently.

Remember too, this fecal matter will not show up for at least 48- 50 plus hours, unless the dog ends up with some digestive upset from too much fat and ends up with diarrhea.

Good luck. If you get worried, there are always x-rays and vets to help you.

You might want to give some globs of vaseline to help the bones pass through. I have a friend who had a rock-eating Corgi, and, other than trying to keep him away from rocks, that was what she'd do when he did swallow something.

Watch out for rigid posture, tense abdomen, straining to pass feces, along with loss of appetite and possible vomiting. If you see any of these, go to the vet right away. I've had my dogs pilfer chicken bones off my plate a few times, though, and never had a problem with them passing them.

The poor Corgi I mentioned above wasn't able to overcome his pica habit, and eventually suffered a perforated bowel when he ate part of a fiberglass plant pot. He had to be euthanized, as the damage was too extensive to repair. Those were the symptoms he showed when things got really bad.

I JUST ATE 3 COOKED CHICKEN CARCASSES OUT OF THE DUMPSTER AND I FEEL FANTASTIC.

Seriously, dogs everywhere eat scraps daily. I think your dog will be okay. I am not saying that nothing can go wrong, just saying that it isn't likely and you can chill.

Thanks! I feel better now, although I'm still going to keep a close eye on her. So far she seems ok. I guess if she doesn't show any symptoms over the next couple of days I can start to relax. I just can't believe she did this. It looks like I'm going to have to childproof the garbage drawer- it's built in to our cabinets. She actually pulled the drawer open somehow. Ha! And my husband has always said she's "not the sharpest knife in the drawer"!

my dog is whenever getting a a chance eating out of the dining table or in the Kitchen Garbage

I can tell you this has happened to me several times, in fact I have one female who (until I got a  new oven) was expert at opening the oven door and has two or three times stolen and eaten a whole cooked chicken, recently my two males stole a half eaten one from the table, obviously someone accidentally left them alone briefly with the kitchen/dining room open.........anyway none of the culprits have ever suffered any bad effects......obviously keep an eye on your dog but he/she will almost certainly be fine.

THanks again everyone for the encouragement. So far my girl seems fine. I gave my her bread last night and some extra salmon oil.  I feed her a raw diet and today I am going to feed mostly muscle meat - no bones. Too many bones causes constipation and she has already had her fill for a couple days!

Oso, Opened the oven door???!!!!! OMG!!! Did you so anything special to make sure everything passed ok when your dog(s) ate the chicken bones?
